What to Wear for Valentine's Day

The day of love doesn't mean you've got to scramble to grab all things red in your wardrobe. While you absolutely can go classic for the occasion, I've got some fresh new ways to feel sexy and romantic for the 14th.

Paint the town peach

Warm hues are considered feminine and playful in comparison to cool colors, which means Valentine's Day is the perfect time to put them to good use.

Give your look a sexy element by pulling out your knee-high boots.

Candy hearts and pencil stripes

Off-the-shoulder tops are a little sexy, a little sweet and the perfect trend piece for Valentine's Day. If you're not comfortable with a full off-the-shoulder, try a cold shoulder top for more coverage, but a similar look.

It's all in the details. Even though it's subtle, wearing these tiny hearts or a delicate floral pattern on February 14th will get me (and you) into the holiday mood. Shop this necklace.

RETRO ROMANTIC

A vintage-inspired look is well suited to this holiday. Try a fit n' flare for a retro silhouette that will highlight your shape.

Want to rock actual vintage? Check out January's Greer Guide to Austin shop and mention us for 20% off.

Add a little edge to your look by popping it with your favorite moto jacket. Fingers crossed the weather cooperates.

If you're feeling adventurous, tie a scarf in your hair or add a headband to pop the look.

What To Wear For The Weekend

Deciding what to wear on your days off can be incredibly difficult considering the range of activities that can take place between a Friday evening and a Sunday night.

Soccer games, brunches, church, grocery shopping, date night—the variety that the weekend brings is what makes it so fun. But the dramatic swing from what's appropriate to wear at one event to the next can make getting ready for those festivities a little stressful. Deciphering the clear difference between dressy casual, casual and the "I'm hanging at home" sweats can dictate how comfortable or out of place you feel at a given activity.

Did you know there is actually a category of dressing called "dressy casual"? Emily Post's 18th Edition of "Etiquette" defines weekend attire as follows:

Dressy casual consists of wearing a dress, skirt and dressy top, dressy pants outfit, or nice jeans and a dressy top.

Casual dressing consists of a sundress, a long or short skirt, khakis or nice jeans, shorts, a plain t-shirt, a polo shirt, a turtleneck, or a casual button-down blouse.

While these categories are quite general and don't include all trending looks (no jumpsuits on the list?!?), they can serve as a guide to what to wear to your many weekend occasions.

The dressy casual outfits work for events like that brunch, a baby shower, date night or a birthday party.

The casual outfits work for events like the soccer game, shopping, routine errands, a picnic in the park.

The sweats, well... they can't leave the front doorsteps.

Last week, Emily and I explored dressy casual and casual occasions to give you an idea of how to dress for the plethora of events.

Weekend wardrobe inspiration right this way...

WANT TO KNOW EXACTLY HOW TO STYLE YOUR WEEKEND WEAR?

TALK WITH ME 1-ON-1.

My mission is to empowering women by making style understandable and attainable for every day occasions. Through a combination of styling, education and coaching, I give women the foundational tools to continuously develop a wardrobe that suits her unique personality and busy lifestyle.

Know Style. Love Style. Live Style.

Systematize. Stylize. Strategize.

Your favorite outfit in your closet should feel like your favorite food: a no brainer. When I see crab cakes on a menu, that's it. I'm ordering them. If I don't, it just feels wrong, because no matter how they come out of the kitchen, I'm going to love them.

This is how your favorite piece of clothing should feel. It is the physical manifestation of love and it's glorious. When you're wearing it, nothing can touch you.

Everything else in your wardrobe is a bit different. Other things should be something you love, yes, but you need a few more rules to make sure it's serving you in the way you need it to each and every time you wear it.

Outfits get stale. And the outfit you've worn 15,30,40 times, is stale. The life has been sucked out of it, and when you put it on, you probably feel this too in the form of exhaustion, anxiety or a lack of excitement.

So it's time you threw all those feelings away and started anew by looking at each component of each outfit. By looking at each component separately, you can create new looks that feels fresh, exciting and fashion-forward.

There are 3 things you need to do to breathe life back into your wardrobe.

1. Systematize.

Creating a system of how to build an outfit is incredibly helpful, because it removes the stress, but leaves the creativity.

For instance, I NEVER choose my jewelry before I choose my clothing. I NEVER choose shoes before I choose my clothing. I NEVER choose a jacket before I choose my basics. I build around 1 of 3 things: a dress, a skirt, jeans.

In other words, create a ritual. This will give you guidance and a route when creating an outfit. And then you get to play...

2. Stylize.

One Dress, Four Ways

Raquel Greer Gordian displays an outfit that pairs the long sleeve gray dress with a red blazer, black booties, statement jewelry, a black belt, and a black handbag.

Raquel Greer Gordian styles the same dress with a fur vest, neutral booties, coral accents, and a gray handbag.
Raquel Greer Gordian styles the same gray dress with a striped turtleneck pullover, burgundy heels, black tassel earrings, and statement handbag.

Disregard what you paired your skirt with last time. Forget about what you put with it before. Get creative with you choice this time. Pull a shirt or sweater you've never put with it.

And don't be scared. Most of us think there's some giant book of rules we need to follow. There isn't. The two things that you need to consider in your style arsenal are: 1) your intuition 2) your creativity

Use both these elements to get excited about getting dressed again.

3. Strategize.

Each outfit must have a purpose. This goes for both your personal and professional life. And I'm not just talking about it being appropriate for a certain situation. Whether you want to be powerful, playful, dynamic...your intention must be clear.

Ask yourself the tough questions to make sure there is a strategy behind each outfit:

Exactly why are you wearing what you are wearing?

What do you want it to say about you?

How does it say what you want it to say about you?

Now I would love to hear from you! Was this guide helpful for reviving that stale outfit we all have? Let me know in the comments below and tell me about the outfits you brought back to life!

A Dress in Three Acts

One thing my clients never say is that they don't have a favorite outfit. Everyone has a favorite outfit. No matter if function or high fashion is the most important component of what you wear to work or to play, we all reach for something in the morning.

The problem my clients face time and time again is the inability to style their wardrobe or their favorite outfit in any way outside of the box. A white shirt can easily work with black pants or a navy dress and a tan blazer can easily fit together, but finding an outfit that excites and surprises you and the people around you is another story.

Thus I found my topic for this month's post. Grab your favorite summer dress RIGHT NOW and pair it with something new, something you haven't thought of before.

I styled my favorite summer dress to give you some ideas on how to wear it from business to brunch. And don't forget to be brave! Your style is unique and specific to you. Treat it as so.

How to Style Your Classic Black Skirt in 5 Ways

VIBE // TRANSITIONAL PIECES FOR TRAIL- BLAZING WOMEN

There seems to be a big focus on sunglasses in Austin and with the weather today, it's easy to see why. What sets Hoiden apart from the rest is the dark color palette of its glasses. That palette extends throughout the store. But they still never loose sight of their femininity, their celebration of womanhood. As women, our personalities are multi-faceted and nuanced, the owner said, so the point of view of Hoiden is exactly that. It is edgy, sophisticated, womanly, and sexy. They have what you need, but also exactly what you want. This store could be in LA or NYC, but the owners always take into account the background of Austin when choosing pieces from around the world. The pieces are for a day like today in Austin when you never want to go home.

Discover Your Spring Style

Being stylish is about defining yourself and your body. Often times the term 'stylish' is applied to people who keep up with the latest trends. Trends come and go, but paying attention to exactly what works for you is important to creating a genuinely chic closet.

Applying the ABC's of image consulting is a good place to start...accentuate, balance, camoflauge. We all have the good, great, and not-so-great things about our body. Understanding, acknowledging and accepting these parts empowers us to create the perfect wardrobe.

There's a couple things to keep in mind when learning your ABC's...

Create Balance

When trying to cover up your less desirable bits, don't forget to accentuate your best attributes. The articles of clothing you use to do these two things should work together harmoniously.

If you want to cover your abdomen, choose a flowy top. Do not also choose flowy pants. Pair a skinny jean. Accentuating the good is just as important as camouflaging the bad.

Find your best fit

Clothing should fit like undergarments, like it was made for you. Since there is no standardized sizing in the US, it can be hard to find the perfect size for you. Instead, find your favorite designers and make them your go-to.

Use color and print strategically

Play with color to create an ensemble all your own. The brighter and bolder the more attention will be driven to that part of you. Think it through and then construct the look. Where do you want the attention driven?

BEEHIVE Boutique

Try something new

Often times we pick fabrics based on preconceived notions of what is good or bad. Choose fabrics not because of what you think should or would work. Step outside your comfort zone. Try new things. Uncharted territory is often the most exciting.

And don't forget to #shoplocal

Recreate Red Carpet Looks in Everyday Style

I have to say that I'm kind of glad award season is over. I always feel stressed about be attentive for every second of each show, and on top of that, I've tried to squeeze an exorbitant number of trips to the movies in over the last couple months. Of course, the movies aren't the important part. It's all about the fashion.

That's why I'm exploring exactly how to translate red carpet looks and trends into everyday style this week. Although these are just a drop in the bucket of red carpet fashion, they're some of my favorite trends from this awards season.

OSCARS // DAKOTA JOHNSON // SCARLET TREND

Take Your Wardrobe from Winter to Spring with These Six Looks

I've learned to always carry a purse big enough to fit a sweater, because every afternoon, that's exactly where my sweater ends up. Austin's weather is unpredictable, to say the least, and the past two weeks have been the worst of it. I'm really never sure what I'm going to get when I step out of my apartment. Even if the day starts out at 40 degrees, you could be sweating by the end of it.

So! Because Austin likes to keep us guessing, I've put together looks to incorporate both winter and spring pieces for a chic style statement for whatever weather comes our way.

FLOWERS & LEATHER

Winter Pieces: Leather Jacket + Infinity Scarf

Spring Pieces: Floral Dress + Open-Toe Pumps

The staff was incredibly sweet and knowledgable. It was the kind of experience I want when I enter a lingerie boutique. It smelled amazing. There were candles lit, a beautiful table display, and many of the pieces were works of art. She also mentioned that many of the Teddies pieces are for meant for life's most special moments. I definitely agree.

5 Essential Pieces for Your Winter Vacation

I have to admit, it has taken me a long time to figure out exactly how to pack the perfect suitcase. Everything I could need ends up in my luggage, but somehow I don't manage to wear everything that snuck in there.

That's because on vacation, when everything is supposed to be easy, I so often wear the same outfit twice. I know, it seems like I should be ashamed. When I'm packing, I have the best of intentions. I imagine myself sipping cocktails on a beach in a full length dress and heels...though in actuality, I am still sipping cocktails, but it's in the most comfortable dress I own. You know what? That's OK. Vacation is about kicking back, relaxing. In reality, style should reflect your state of mind. When I remember that, I realize it's OK to (in this instance) wear the same thing twice.

Of course, that doesn't mean you can't still look good while you relax. Being comfortable and looking good while you do it will make you more excited about your vacation. Whether you are at the beach or on the ski slopes, here are five versatile pieces with looks built around them that I would recommend bringing.

Heading to the Slopes?          Heading to the Sand?

Now I would love to know! Which travel essential sneaks into your suitcase the most? Make sure to comment below how you incorporated some of these essentials on your next winter vacation!

The Fabric of Society: Fashion and Style Throughout the Twentieth Century

Fashion evolves. The work of every generation is broken apart by newcomers, who discard what they dislike and use the remaining rubble to build the next generation’s styles and trends. One thing I’ve always loved about fashion is that it is an expression of everything that's going on around us. Social, political, and religious movements are reflected in what each generation wears.

When I think about MLK Day, my first reaction is to consider the developments in fashion that stem from the remarkable, unprecedented change that occurred in that decade. Then I feel guilty. How shallow can I be, considering fashion in the context of the greatest social movement in history? But putting my self-consciousness aside, truth be told, it is astounding. How quickly the conservative, traditionalism of the 1950’s shifted into the forward-thinking 1960s, only to be radically transformed into the free-loving 1970s.

Fashion of course can never fully honor the work, or the pain and suffering, of those who fought during the civil rights movement. But it is fascinating to study the broad-reaching impact generational change has. To honor that, I’ve pulled together a few looks that pay homage to each generation and the change they saw.

Now I would love to hear from you! What are some trends that you remember from the twentieth century? Leave a comment below and tell me how you might pull some outfit inspirations from past decades!

New Year, New You...Not Quite Yet.

So you've rung in the New Year by eating and drinking your weight in cookies, crab cakes, and cocktails. Hopefully you're already on your way to a full detox, but until you're back to the pre-foodbaby weight, here's a couple ways to disguise that pudge from all that fudge.

Dark Colors

Dark colors to the rescue! No matter if it's black, grey, navy, or even burgundy, live in it. We all know dark colors camouflage whatever's underneath them, so make sure you dress up the darks with pieces specifics to your body type. For instance:

If you're an apple, don't just throw on a pair of black leggings. You're hiding your best asset. Instead, pair a bright pant with a simple black sweater. The pop of color will not only flatter the part of your body where you gain weight, it will draw attention to your slimmer features.

For hourglass, always accentuate the waist, and pair a dark sweater or dress with a dark belt. You tend to gain weight in the middle too, so there's a delicate balance between showing your shape and covering the wobbly bits.

Skip The Potato Sack.

Despite popular belief, a sack of an outfit will make you look LARGER, much larger. Instead, stick to something form-fitting that doesn't have the suction of an octopus to it. As Marilyn once said, "Your clothes should be tight enough to show you're a woman, but loose enough to show you're a lady."

Create Inside Lines.

People will look where you want them to, if you help them. Drawing their eyes to the inside of your body will create the illusion of a slimmer silhouette. Strong vertical, colorful lines on a dress or the lapel of a blazer will do the trick.

Don't Forget Your SHAPEWEAR.

Most of us have it, though it tends to be tucked away in the underwear drawer for special events. Don't be afraid to use this tool for every event from networking to business formal to happy hour. You have it for a reason. Now use it.

The 5 Essential Sweaters for Your Closet

We all fill our closet with a certain level of impulse buys. I always find myself buying a plethora of loud and out-there sweaters. While a trendy piece can seem fun for a season or two, it eventually seems outdated and uninteresting. You need staple pieces. You especially need staple sweaters because sweaters have a big task to accomplish. They have to work well with many other things in your closet: workwear, jackets, pants, dresses, skirts...pretty much everything except your swim suit. Thus, I've dedicated this week to the five essential sweaters you need in your closet.

5. V-neck

The V-neck is naturally slimming and versatile, both of which are important things for almost anyone's lifestyle. You're ready for work or play.

PERK: It doubles as a top when you aren't in the mood to handle layering.

JUST ADD: dark denim + a pointed toe pump

4. Shawl Collar

This sweater is all about the one thing we all love about sweaters: the COZY factor. Slip into this outfit, and you'll remember exactly why you love this season.

PERK: It's perfect when running to the grocery store or a walk in the park.

JUST ADD: classic white tee + colorful pant + infinity scarf

3. Maxi Sweater

One of my favorite elements to play with in style is proportion. The Maxi Sweater gives any outfit a playful touch. Dress it up, dress it down. It's a piece that works well with your other closet classics.

PERK:  This simple piece can become eye-catching just because of it's relationship to other parts of your outfit.

JUST ADD: mini skirt + booties +  graphic tee

2. Cropped Sweater

This is my favorite piece during the couple weeks when it's not quite necessary to have something heavier.

PERK: This sweater accentuates your sexy, feminine shape.

JUST ADD: High-waisted skirt + flats

1. Cardigan

This is a piece for all occasions. Whether you love neutrals or a big pop of color, add this piece to any outfit for a sophisticated finish.

PERK: It goes with everything from grandma's pearls to a body con dress.

JUST ADD: tank + midi skirt + statement necklace

Now, I would love to hear from you! Tell me in the comment section below which sweater essential you'll be rocking this fall!

SLIPPERY WHEN WET: A Guide to the Best Moisturizing Lipsticks This Season

It's almost impossible to escape the one big side effect of cold weather: dryness. Layering with sweaters, scarves, and beanies will help protect your body and hair, but guarding your face from the winter winds is another story. The moment you leave the house, it often feels like your best attempts to keep your lips radiant and soft have fallen by the wayside. Not only do you experience discomfort due to irritation from the cold, but the cold can leave you looking less than attractive when you arrive at your destination. Dry, cracked lips can be an unsightly little detail, but thanks to lipsticks that protect and perfect your pout, winter can be a little more pleasant and pretty.

5. Hourglass Femme Rouge Velvet Creme Lipstick

This all natural lipstick provides moisture to plump your lips even in the coldest winter.

My favorite Hourglass color : Nocturnal

4. Bite Beauty Luminous Creme Lipstick:

Also all-natural, this lipstick is long-lasting, so there's no re-application necessary during your 9 to 5. It also comes in a wide spectrum of colors, so whether you love a classic red, an understated nude, or an eye-catching purple, Bite Beauty has the perfect one for you.

My favorite BB color: Tannin

3. Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick

I've loved Urban Decay for so many years because their make-up is so playful and eclectic. The Revolution Lipstick exceeds those expectations. This lipstick is narrow for easy application when you're on the go. From matte to shiny and peach to plum, this lipstick will provide the party girl with her perfect look.

My favorite Urban Decay color: Shame

2. Laura Mercier Creme Smooth Lipstick

Classic, elegant, and subtle, this lipstick provides all day coverage from the morning meeting to the dinner date. Vitamin E and olive oil provide constant moisture and antioxidants to protect and heel your lips on the driest days.

My favorite Laura Mercier color: Sienna

1. Nars Audacious Lipstick

Nars is my #1 pick for this season's best moisturizing lipstick because it gives necessary moisture without the worry of smudging onto skin or teeth. One swipe of color across your lips is enough to keep you looking fabulous for 6 to 8 hours. Nars also has the perfect variety of colors for all seasons like coral for spring or bright pink for summer. Stick to this stick and you'll be set for whatever your day brings.

My favorite Nars color: Jeanne
