Brunch Styled.

Whether you celebrate Easter or not, this Sunday is the perfect occasion for champagne, chilaquiles and a dress that feels fun, flirty and bright. I love dresses for the hot weather, because they're breezy and easy, but they're especially ideal for your dressy casual occasions.

Get inspired to throw on your Sunday best and celebrate the weekend with these 3 looks.

What to Wear for SXSW

SXSW means a little something different to all of us. Perhaps you were roped into it by your job or you're hoping to network furiously during the week or you're just a lover of live music in search of your next favorite band. No matter the reason, you've got to get dressed and you've got to look good.

There's a lot of freedom in what you can wear to SXSW, and with freedom comes questions. When you know the rules of style, there's only one question you need to focus on though "what is the outfit that will make you feel absolutely stunning at the event?"

If you're left without a clear answer to this question, here are a few ideas to consider when putting together your outfit for the party ahead.

Singin' The Blues

The weather will be unpredictable (as always.) Mix textures like cotton and leather to be prepared for anything.

Tie up your top for a flirty touch.

Sunglasses are the perfect Austin accessory. Go with your most eclectic to bring personality into your look.

BUSINESS MEET CASUAL

Rock a graphic tee and a blazer for a professional edge with a rock n' roll vibe.

Let your hair down to give your look a wild and free feel.

Mules are my favorite trend of the moment, and they're comfortable too! Slip yours on and head to the event for a look that you'll feel relaxed in all day.

Party preppy

SXSW is about energy, so pull out your most vibrant accessories to celebrate. Love this cuff? Use the code "GreerVIP" to get 30% off this and every piece at NinaBerenato.com.

Pattern match a smaller stripe with a larger stripe to pop both pieces into a cute and complex look.

And remember style is about highlighting you. If you need more guidance on how to create looks from your own wardrobe, book a Greer Style Chat to talk 1-on-1 with me about your unique needs and image goals. Xoxo, Raquel

Short Cut to Style

Last week, I was sitting in my living room next to my huge windows on a gloriously sunny day. I had picturesque plans for the afternoon. I was ready to take on the world. Unfortunately, those plans came to a screeching halt all too quickly. It is basically summer, and I was wearing jeans. I would soon start to melt.

I begrudgingly went to my closet to see what my options for shorts were and realized that I, like many of you, am stuck in what can only be described as shorts purgatory. My options were to wear my Daisy Duke-inspired shorts (I now wonder, “Were those ever appropriate?”), to throw on a pair with paint stains or to stick to my jeans and be miserable in this Texas heat.

I set out on a mission to find the perfect pair with 3 thoughts in mind.

#1 Comfort is non-negotiable.

My favorite new find was a pair of long stretchy shorts that look extremely tailored. I finished the look with a light weight top and added a sparkly statement necklace.

#2 Color elevates any look.

Another top find of mine were bright and patterned shorts from J.Crew. Add a graphic tee to keep it cheerful, a striped button-up for a polished look, or a silky blouse for a chic feel.

#3 Pick a Pair for your Shape.

I’d venture to say that a lot of shopping frustration stems from not understanding your body type. To find which shorts works for your shape, try on many pairs! I have an hourglass shape, so I wanted to try my luck with a pair of high waisted shorts that would accentuate that shape. I added a summery crop-top and wedges and walked out feeling feisty.

I’m pleased to report back that there are so many stores right now in Austin that have exactly what I was looking for.

And when you venture out on your shopping trip, don't forget the biggest rule: when you find that pair that makes you look and feel fantastic, buy them!

3 More options to inspire your next outfit...

SUN. SWIM. STYLE.

Whether you’ve been scouring the internet for a stunning swimsuit for months, are looking to reimagine a staple one-piece, or have avoided thinking about swimsuits completely, swimsuit season is here in Texas.

When you live in a city that is as water friendly as Austin, you need to be prepared at a moment’s notice to cool off in style. Swimsuit shopping can be tiresome. We’re always happy to help you shop. For now, let’s focus on the dressing: how to style the outfits that go over those swimsuits.

If you and some friends are headed out to Lake Travis, comfort is key! Chances are your clothes will get soaked, so don’t wearing something that is too delicate. Cut off shorts, a fun graphic tee, strappy sandals, and a pair of mod sunglasses are all you need to look fantastic and carefree before and after you’ve been on the boat.

Emily Blanco displays an outfit styled by Raquel Greer Gordian that is perfect if you are going out on the lake.

Headed to the beach? Keep it light. A kimono and flip flops are easy breezy in the sand.  You’ll be in the sun and wind all day, so don’t underestimate the value of coverage -- grab a hat and your favorite sunnies to make a statement.

Emily Blanco exhibits an outfit styled by Raquel Greer Gordian that is perfect if you are headed to the beach.

If you’re day-tripping with some friends out to Hamilton Pool or in the Greenbelt, choose a sporty, billowy dress that pairs well with light weight sneakers. Since there is a little bit of a hike to get to these spots, this will protect your feet while still staying stylish. Complete the look with a patterned tote and bold beach towel.

Emily Blanco displays an outfit styled by Raquel Greer Gordian that is perfect if you're planning on day-tripping.

Staying poolside for brunch this Sunday? Grab that romper! Keep it playful and sassy with a wedge and huge hoop earrings. Now, enjoy a mimosa knowing that you are rocking that look.

How to Make a Flawless First Impression

The #1 rule I abide by when I’m getting ready is this: it is always better to be over-dressed than under-dressed. If I’m uncertain about how formal an event is, I know I’d rather look put together than ill-prepared and inappropriate. My mom engrained this philosophy into me, and it has saved me from embarrassing outfit mishaps on numerous occasions! The reason this philosophy is so important is because first impressions are essential to how we view each other personally and professionally.

When the maid of honor is giving a speech at a wedding, when a boss is reflecting on an employee’s hard work, or even when friends simply want to reminisce on old times, the most referenced stories are their first impressions – what they thought of the other when they first met.

First impressions set the tone. They show others who you are through a multitude of nonverbal cues, and what you’re wearing is one of the biggest contributing factors. This can be both exhilarating and intimidating, thus I’ve compiled a few outfit rules and ideas to assist you in confidently making your professional mark.

The Interview

Emily Blanco models a professional outfit perfect for a job interveiew.

Do:

Choose an outfit that shows your personality.

Don’t:

Go too bold with the patterns or colors.

When choosing an outfit for an interview, it is important to research the company to find out as much about the workplace atmosphere as possible. You want to stand out to the company while showing that you can mesh with their vibe. For this look, I went with a business professional outfit that was tailored to my body and was in flattering colors. I felt confident because I was staying true to what I love about my style, as well as dressing appropriately.

Client Meetings

Emily Blanco displays a look styled by Raquel Greer Gordian that is appropriate for client meetings.

Do:

Make a statement.

Don’t:

Go too casual.

When you’re meeting with a client, you want to express to them exactly who you are and why you are trustworthy.  Expressing yourself through your outfit allows you to showcase your personality and professionalism while simultaneously allowing them to feel confident and secure in working with you.

Networking Event

Do:

Bring in a bold pattern or trendy piece.

Emily Blanco models a bold red blazer that is perfect for a networking event.

Don’t:

Take yourself too seriously.

Whether you’re looking for a job, new clients or new employees, make sure that you’re properly representing your company and the standards you keep. That being said, formality isn’t as necessary in these settings.

There is more freedom to bring in slightly trendier pieces at these events, so give it a try!

When choosing an outfit for my most recent networking event, I started with a tailored track pant and worked my way up from there. I’m obsessed with nudes right now, so I chose a simple silk, nude top and a bright coral (one of my best colors) blazer to maintain a level of professionalism. I finished the look with a springy open-toed heel.

First Day

Emily Blanco displays a look styled by Raquel Greer Gordian that is a good way to start off a first day at work.

Do:

Tailor your look.

Don’t:

Forget to maintain modesty

How your present yourself when meeting new co-workers is key to how they will treat you and work with you.

When you feel authentic and confident in an outfit, others will feel comfortable around you. In other words, maintain a level of professionalism that encourages productivity rather than gossip. If you can feel how cold the chair is when you sit, your skirt is may be short. If you have to hold your blouse up when you bend over, wear an under shirt.

In Full Bloom: Inspiring Your Style with Austin's Wildflowers

Whether we realize it or not, we are constantly incorporating what we see around us into our personal style and wardrobe. Wildlife is a perpetual muse in fashion and in Austin, wildflowers are the wildlife that surrounds us during this time of the year. They are already popping up and as stunning as ever.

Emily Blanco displays a picture of the wildflower Plum Thistle.

Wildflower: Plum Thistle               Pantone Color: Rose Quartz

If anyone understands using your surroundings to perpetuate creativity, it’s Pantone Color Institute.  Pantone uses color analyses to forecast color trends and create successful design strategy.  Every year, they choose a color of the year. This color is inevitably used by interior designers, painters, and fashion designers as their inspiration for the season to come.  These colors are discernibly current, decisively gorgeous, and widely praised.

Emily Blanco displays an outfit inspired by the Pantone color Snorkel Blue and bluebonnets. The outfit consists of a rust-colored blazer, coral pumps, a printed miniskirt, a gray tank, a blue bucket bag, and gold accessories.

This season’s top colors are subtle and dreamy.  They still have the luminous glows we have all come to expect of spring colors, but they are in unexpected hues like Rose Quartz, Serenity, and Peach Echo.

Emily Blanco shows a picture of a buttercup wildflower.

Wildflower: Buttercup                    Pantone Color: Buttercup

So this week, I ventured to multiple Austin boutiques to see if I could spot any of these beautiful spring colors, and I was not disappointed.  Of the top 10 Pantone colors, there were four that stuck out to me in an unforgettable way; I couldn’t help but notice the similarities between a handful of wildflowers and the spring varieties on the racks.

They were both perfectly spring and perfectly Austin.

5 Minute Fashion: Is It Really Possible?

What’s holding you back from having the style you’ve always wanted? If your answer to that question is time, then you are far from being alone.  Crying babies, pressing work clients, an active social life, relationships – they all take up our time and energy. Sometimes, the first thing to get the boot is self care.

I enjoy waking up early and slowly getting ready for the day. This is a luxury that I know I won’t have forever, so I relish it.  After hearing a mouthful from an envious friend, I realized how much time I was wasting. She then challenged me, for the next 3 days, to style my outfit in 5 minutes or less.

The truth is, my experiment is a stark reality for a lot of you, and so it is with genuine respect and curiosity that I set out on this mission. Time is a luxury, and it’s one that I have been wasting!

On Day One, I went with what I thought would be easiest. 5 minutes is not a long time when you think about your outfit, your accessories and your shoes! I chose a green dress that flatters my shape, is business casual, and is in my color wheel.

Emily Blanco models a business casual look with a green dress, statement necklace, denim jacket, and a braided belt.
Emily Blanco sports a business casual look, including a pair of peep-toe booties.

I paired this spotted green number with a statement necklace with contrasting deep blues, a simple gold belt, a blue jean jacket (that was gone by noon), and some peep-toe booties for a little bit of flare. All in all, I felt good – and I made it in just under 5 minutes!

By Day Two, I was ready to go again! This time I needed to make it a little harder on myself, so I decided to mix and match pieces rather than choose a dress. I bet you can guess what my go-to was – a pencil skirt!

Emily Blanco models a look with a floral pencil skirt, booties, and a gray tank.
Emily Blanco models a look starring a floral pencil skirt.

This floral skirt makes me feel ultra chic and feminine. I put this muted gray racerback top with it to bring out the darker tones in the skirt, and added my favorite nude booties. The result was that I felt like a boss! I chose all of this and at 4:37, all that was left to add was a ballet-pink stone earring.

After reveling in my success from the previous day, I assumed Day 3 would be easy, because I wanted to dress casually. I completely failed. You know why? Life. It happens! I searched up and down and could NOT find the jeans I wanted to wear. Sometimes the stress of it all makes you blind to what is actually hanging directly in front of you in your closet.

Nevertheless, I had to power through. I picked a different pair of jeans, added my favorite nude shirt, a leopard print scarf, flats, and sea foam stud jewelry.

Here is what’s important to consider when creating a wardrobe that works for your life: you need to have clothing that can be mixed and matched in multiple ways.  Most importantly, you need to like your clothing! Filtering through pieces you don’t like takes up unnecessary time.

Emily Blanco models a casual look with some ripped jeans, black scrappy flats, a cheetah-print infinity scarf, a simple tee, and some statement earrings.
Emily Blanco showcases a pair of statement earrings and a statement ring.

If you have a shirt you feel you could take over the world in, there are probably a million ways to wear it. Add a different necklace each time, try a new skirt with it, or add a blazer and pumps. Even if the individual items you’re wearing are old, you’ll revitalize them.

This challenge gave me extra time in the morning, and it was time that I used productively. I may not be getting children ready for school or preparing for meetings like my CEO friend, but time will always be a hot commodity, and only having 5 minutes to get dressed allowed me to prioritize and be imaginative with the options that I had.

Style Strategy 101: The Pencil Skirt

To no one’s surprise, springtime is basically here in Austin. I suddenly feel like I'm playing catch up to get my warm weather outfits ready, so times like these call for a back to basics strategy.

Emily Blanco discusses how a pencil skirt is a style staple.

In this situation, I have a go-to piece that never fails. It’s my little style secret: THE PENCIL SKIRT

It's classic, yet never boring. It's professional with a touch of sexiness. It's bold without being loud.

Everyone experiences style differently. Every woman has her own feelings about the pencil skirt. Some of you ladies love the piece for its dependability and versatility. Others of you might think it too difficult a look to pull off. And still others might find it stiff.

Hourglass and Pear Shape: Just Add a Cropped Top

Emily Blanco displays a look with a tweed pencil skirt paired with a lace crop top, black leather booties, and a statement necklace.

I'm here to tell you that this piece has a lot to offer for every shape and style.

When choosing a pencil skirt, it needs to hit at your natural waist (the smallest part of your midsection). Depending on your shape, this will either give you some curves or accentuate what you've already got.

This piece is timeless and easy to transition from work to play.

Heading to a happy hour after work? Untuck your button up, tie it in a knot at your waist, and add a bright red lip. This will highlight your skirt and give you a fresh, more casual look.

Emily Blanco exhibits a versatile day-to-night look with a striped pencil skirt, chambray button-up, and red flats and accessories.

What to Wear for Weddings Galore

Repeat after me: "I will not wear the same boring thing to every wedding this year."

Wedding season is a funny one, because it's really not like any other occasion or seasonal event. Even my daily getup gets more thought than my wedding season one. For some reason, I am so distracted by gifts, travel, and agenda up until the day of the nuptials that picking any outfit is inevitably a last minute decision. No more.

This year is the year to find something you feel and look beautiful in. Now, to find that special something...There are a lot of factors to consider when putting together a look for a wedding.

The first is subtlety.

Be subtle, not too sexy, and as always, incredibly chic. This is probably the only non-work occasion where an outfit should be understated, because you never want to take attention away from the wedding dress and the bride. This rule applies to the dress, the jewelry and the shoes.

Having said that, your understated look may be someone else's over-the-top outfit. Stick to what you consider understated. Your style is your own, and even when toned down, you should still always be able to express it.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how subtlety is important in order to avoid taking attention away from the bride.
Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how you can still stick to what you consider understated and express your personal style.

The second is comfort.

I worry about being comfortable for the duration of a wedding much more than any other occasion, even if it's just as long. Perhaps it's the dancing or the amount of food that I'm predicting I'll eat or perhaps it's both. Either way, comfort is important. If you also relish the fact that dancing and food are the best parts of a wedding, I would give your dress a test run. Pop on some music and dance in it at home.

The third is environment.

Weddings are so often indoor and outdoor, so picking the right fabric and layering pieces is key to staying warm enough or cool enough wherever you are. Terrain is also a factor to consider. This year I have a few weddings where they were very specific about wearing shoes to fit the outdoor venue. Even if it isn't mentioned to you, the venue needs to be on your radar.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how the type of terrain the wedding will be in is important to consider when planning an outfit.

How to Wear Denim to Work

Figuring out how to take denim out of it's natural weekend habit can be a bit dicey. It's perfect for your Saturday stroll, but incorporating it into your workwear takes a bit more skill. The trick is to treat it like your other workwear staples. It's a substitute for the white blouse, navy blazer, etc...The reason to wear it instead of those staples? It's unexpected. That's what style is all about. When a style element is unexpected, it's interesting. And so are you. Here's how to execute it:

There are only a few things that I think you absolutely need in your wardrobe. A black skirt is one of them. No matter your style, body shape, or ideal color palette, a black skirt should live in your wardrobe because of its versatility. It's the perfect piece to pull out when getting dressed but feels like the most daunting task. For those days, here's exactly how to rock it:

This boutique is full of energy. When I visited, music was booming and people were everywhere, bustling around the walls covered with brightly colored clothing and displays teeming with knick-knacks and custom- made rings. Leighelena carries jewelry made by many different designers, but the highlight are the pieces the store creates itself. I am a sucker for cocktail rings, and at Leighelena, there are rings that can be customized. Colorful, magnetic plates can be attached to the base of each ring, so you can match any ring to the look of your outfit. Going into this shop is a mood elevator, and if you're looking for fun jewelry, this is a good place to find it.

VIBE // TRANSITIONAL PIECES FOR TRAIL- BLAZING WOMEN

There seems to be a big focus on sunglasses in Austin and with the weather today, it's easy to see why. What sets Hoiden apart from the rest is the dark color palette of its glasses. That palette extends throughout the store. But they still never loose sight of their femininity, their celebration of womanhood. As women, our personalities are multi-faceted and nuanced, the owner said, so the point of view of Hoiden is exactly that. It is edgy, sophisticated, womanly, and sexy. They have what you need, but also exactly what you want. This store could be in LA or NYC, but the owners always take into account the background of Austin when choosing pieces from around the world. The pieces are for a day like today in Austin when you never want to go home.

SXSW STYLE

It's coming whether you want it to or not. Some of us look forward to it and others cringe at the idea of the crowds. No matter the category you fall in to, it's essential to be stylish at SXSW.

Whether you're sipping cocktails at a lounge or in a giant pack of people, your outfit should reflect your desired mood, the music, and the venue. So! Since you may be in need of something new for your event, I visited and photographed some of Austin's top shops for South By style.

Discover Your Spring Style

Being stylish is about defining yourself and your body. Often times the term 'stylish' is applied to people who keep up with the latest trends. Trends come and go, but paying attention to exactly what works for you is important to creating a genuinely chic closet.

Applying the ABC's of image consulting is a good place to start...accentuate, balance, camoflauge. We all have the good, great, and not-so-great things about our body. Understanding, acknowledging and accepting these parts empowers us to create the perfect wardrobe.

There's a couple things to keep in mind when learning your ABC's...

Create Balance

When trying to cover up your less desirable bits, don't forget to accentuate your best attributes. The articles of clothing you use to do these two things should work together harmoniously.

If you want to cover your abdomen, choose a flowy top. Do not also choose flowy pants. Pair a skinny jean. Accentuating the good is just as important as camouflaging the bad.

Find your best fit

Clothing should fit like undergarments, like it was made for you. Since there is no standardized sizing in the US, it can be hard to find the perfect size for you. Instead, find your favorite designers and make them your go-to.

Use color and print strategically

Play with color to create an ensemble all your own. The brighter and bolder the more attention will be driven to that part of you. Think it through and then construct the look. Where do you want the attention driven?

Try something new

Often times we pick fabrics based on preconceived notions of what is good or bad. Choose fabrics not because of what you think should or would work. Step outside your comfort zone. Try new things. Uncharted territory is often the most exciting.

And don't forget to #shoplocal
