What to Wear for Valentine's Day 2018

...a day of chocolate, wine and some of my favorite sultry colors. All elements combined, it's up there as one of the best holidays/excuses to go out to dinner on a weeknight.

But there is still one question lurking...what wiiiiill you wear?

Luckily, I've got you covered.

In this week's #GreerGuideToStyle video I'm talking V-Day trends, unexpected items to wear on the 14th and how to pair statement shoes with every outfit. Watch below and celebrate your sexiest self. Because you deserve it, girl.

The Red That's Right For You

Red comes into fashion every year around this time, but in 2017, red is truly the trend color of the holidays. In most Austin shops, there's numerous pieces in many different varieties of red to choose from.

This makes it equally as difficult to shop for your new holiday piece as it is exciting, because the process can turn from fun to overwhelming with the amount of options.

So this week, I'm giving you some guidance on how to pick your pieces for your lifestyle and the best red for your personal color palette.

The first step in choosing your red (or any color) is knowing your color palette.

Which is why a color analysis is always the first step I go through with my clients to figure out what version of each color looks best on them.

Everyone can wear every color, but there are certain characteristics within the color (i.e. lightness, darkness, warmth...) that make it well suited to your natural attributes.

Below are three palettes to consider when choosing your right red.

For this palette, try a coral red. The clarity and lightness of the hue play into your color palette and accentuate your eyes.

If you're a professional woman who heads into an office regularly, add this color to your wardrobe through a blazer. While it may feel like a bold choice (and it is), you can balance the brightness of the coral jacket with neutrals. Add a camel turtle neck and jeans for business casual or cream trousers and a champagne blouse for business formal. Finish both looks with nude pumps.

For this palette, try a garnet or apple red. The darkness of garnet will highlight your skin tone, while a brighter hue like apple will intensify your hair color.

To incorporate an apple-like hue, try a patterned shift dress in red & black plaid. This piece will work for a holiday weekend event like The Trail of Lights or as a workwear piece during a day at the office.

Keep warm and heighten the elegance of the look by adding opaque black tights. Finish the outfit with black cowboy boots for casual occasions or a bold leopard pump for work.

If your features fit this palette, you'll want to try a brick red or scarlet this season.

Since your palette is deep, you can pair these hues with navy or play into the warmth of the colors through camel or gold neutrals.

Got a holiday party coming up? Incorporate these reds into your holiday outfit through a variety of statement jackets. Try a faux fur jacket for a retro vibe or tartan plaid for classic touch.

ATX Event Styling: The Trail of Lights

The Trails of Lights is by far one of my favorite annual Austin activities. I look forward to it ALL. YEAR. LONG. I grew up in Austin, so the nostalgia and fond memories are enough to bring me back year after year.

The energy, the scenery and the people watching make for an iconic Austin tradition that's perfect to visit with friends, family or a date.

And while it's easy to say that casual occasions (like this one) don't need your full fashion attention, they do.

To feel good anytime, anywhere...you need to look good.

Which is why I'm talking about it this week on the #GreerGuidetoStyle. Watch the video below and leave me a comment about what you're going to be rocking for this season's stroll through Zilker Park.

What to Wear to Holiday Parties

The time of year is upon us when we mix, mingle and make merry with our families, friends and coworkers at holiday parties. These occasions are the perfect opportunity to show off your personal style and get festive with your wardrobe.

Whether the holiday party you're attending is dressy casual or formal, feeling good in what you're wearing is key to kicking back and having a great time. A few pieces to consider for your holiday shindig...

Cold-Shoulder Dress

The cold-shoulder trend is hanging in there over the holidays, and there's no better way to incorporate this style than with a feminine and festive holiday dress. A longer sleeve will help keep you warm while the cold shoulder adds visual interest to the dress. Extra style points here if you...

wear red!

No color signifies "holiday season!" better than red, and this year, it's winter's trendiest hue. Whether you choose a classic cherry, oxblood, or coral, you can't go wrong with red for a holiday occasion.

Festive Details

Beadwork and sequins are perfect embellishments to wear to your holiday event because they bring ENERGY to your look. Even a single piece with intricate detail adds a powerful yet elegant touch to your overall outfit for events with cocktail, formal or black tie dress codes.

Envelope Clutch

Carrying all your essentials for a big night out isn't a job for your day-to-day tote. With a large envelope clutch, you're able to bring everything you need for the evening (and in a chic, event-appropriate way!)

animal print coat

It's easy to throw on an overcoat in a safe neutral like black, navy or tan, but where's the fun in that?! Cheetah, leopard, python... animal prints are perfect for a heavy coat because they let you show off your personal style even when temperatures drop.

What to Wear for Valentine's Day

The day of love doesn't mean you've got to scramble to grab all things red in your wardrobe. While you absolutely can go classic for the occasion, I've got some fresh new ways to feel sexy and romantic for the 14th.

Photographer: Natalie Beurskens

Paint the town peach

Warm hues are considered feminine and playful in comparison to cool colors, which means Valentine's Day is the perfect time to put them to good use.

Give your look a sexy element by pulling out your knee-high boots.

Candy hearts and pencil stripes

Off-the-shoulder tops are a little sexy, a little sweet and the perfect trend piece for Valentine's Day. If you're not comfortable with a full off-the-shoulder, try a cold shoulder top for more coverage, but a similar look.

It's all in the details. Even though it's subtle, wearing these tiny hearts or a delicate floral pattern on February 14th will get me (and you) into the holiday mood. Shop this necklace.

A vintage-inspired look is well suited to this holiday. Try a fit n' flare for a retro silhouette that will highlight your shape.

Want to rock actual vintage? Check out January's Greer Guide to Austin shop and mention us for 20% off.

Add a little edge to your look by popping it with your favorite moto jacket. Fingers crossed the weather cooperates.

If you're feeling adventurous, tie a scarf in your hair or add a headband to pop the look.

My little valentine, Norma Jeane.

How to Pack for This Weekend

If you're visiting the relatives (or anyone, for that matter) over the holidays, this one's for you. If you're not traveling for the holidays, welp, don't worry: there's plenty here for you too.

Planning out exactly what you'll wear over the holiday weekend means there's one less thing to worry about. And travel or not, we all need that.

So here it is. Signed, sealed, delivered for you to recreate from the contents of your own closet.

Keep it simple. Don't overwork it.

What's on the style agenda:

Day 1:

Day 2:

Day 3:

And here are the steps to make sure everything works...

Step #1
Choose your jeans wisely.

I chose my Madewell flare jeans for this trip, because they're comfortable, easy to wear with boots and thick enough that I know I'll be warm.

In addition to blue jeans, add a pair of leggings to your carry-on. Packing the perfect suitcase is about finding the sweet spot between having too much and too little. Leggings will ensure you have a back up if you want to switch things up.

Pull your favorite Classic sweaters.

One of the biggest issues you encounter when packing is that you pull what you don't love. You get on vacation, open your bag and go "why did I bring that?!" Listen to your intuition. Go with what you know you'll wear and what you love to wear. Especially with a short trip, your choices will be limited.

So be cutthroat.

Both sweaters should versatile; easy to dress up or dress down. Each should be in good condition, up-to-date and versatile.

Note: No sweatshirts allowed!

DON'T FORGET YOUR Accessories!

I've said it a billion times, and yes, I'm saying it again...no outfit is complete without accessories! Even if you're spending the holidays at your great aunt's house, your running-around-her-town outfit must include accessories.

For a crew neck sweater, go with a bib-necklace or beaded necklace, which accentuates the shape of the collar. A v-neck is great with a long or short pendant necklace to highlight the slimming silhouette of the v-neck.

I highly recommend packing two necklaces, so you can mix and match your accessories with different outfits. Multiple accessories will ensure you don't get bored with your look.

In addition, add stud earrings for every daytime outing and a pair of statement earrings for night.

A pop of color necklace for my crew neck sweater!

The soft hues of my pendant necklace and v-neck sweater balance each other well.

The soft hues of my pendant necklace and v-neck sweater balance each other well.

Wait! YOU'll need more ACCESSORIES!

Don't forget your scarves. I'm packing two, so I can choose a scarf depending on my mood. The colorful one is for my playful moods, the gray is for my serious moods. And yes, you will have many moods when hanging with family. Style is all about creativity, so don't be afraid to mix and match your scarves with both sweaters. It's eclectic, fun and gives each outfit a fresh feel.

If you're going somewhere reeeeeally cold, pick gloves and a hat to match each scarf.

Fold them into your suitcase messy or clean. Most heavy scarves will remain wrinkle-free, so you'll be set to throw them on when you land.

You'll probably have a dressy dinner one or two nights this weekend. Bring your little black dress for this occasion. If you're going out to dinner, rather than staying in, throw your crew neck sweater on top. Both necklaces will work for the crew neck sweater, so put on a different necklace at night than the one you had on all day. Add your statement earrings, and the outfit is done!

  • Bring two easy to throw on tees or casual blouses for under your sweaters. Make sure they're presentable. In other words, if you get hot and take off your sweater, you shouldn't be embarrassed wearing them.
  • Bring one tunic top (aka a long top that covers your derrière) to go over leggings.
  • Add your winter coat to the mix to keep you warm all weekend.
  • Bring one pair of booties. You can mix black and brown, so if you feel up to a living outside the box, pair brown!
  • Traveling for more than a few days? Double up on everything.

What To Wear For Your Holiday Parties

December is here, and soon the holiday parties will be to! Whether you're keeping it low key at a friend's shindig or attending a client party downtown, you need to find an outfit that reflects who you are and how you want to be seen.

Each occasion will be festive, fun and full of energy. So should your getup.

With all of the tasks to tackle during the holiday season like gifts, decorating and holiday cards, it's important to look at creating your outfit not as another chore, but rather an exciting way to get into the mood of the season. This mindset will make you more enthused to attend parties and celebrate your style this season.

You don't have to spend a ton of money adding a bunch of different pieces to your wardrobe. Adding 1-3 fresh pieces will instantly bring your closet basics up a notch.

Every single outfit you wear should make you feel fabulous, and your 2016 holiday look is no exception.

Get festive

Option #1
Swap your classic cardigan for a more festive outer layer.

Option #2
Swap your dainty jewelry for statement pieces.

When adding bolder jewelry to your outfit, choose a statement necklace and stud earrings or statement earrings and a single strand necklace. Don't overcrowd your headspace. It's can easily become distracting, rather than enhancing.

If you want to add more jewelry, bring in a cocktail ring and an arm full or bangles.

Option #3
Swap your classic flats for statement heels.

Option #4
wap your neutral makeup for a bold accent look.

Add a cat eye look with liquid liner.

Add a bold red lip for a dramatic and festive touch.
If you want a trendier (rather than classic) look, try plum.

4 Ways to Wear Your Holiday Sweater

Red is a color I love to wear year round, but when it gets to the holiday season, I am more excited than ever to wear one of my favorite staple colors. I've created the looks below with a bright, bold piece, but even if your go-to cardigan is a neutral like black or tan, it will do perfectly. Dress it up, dress it down. It's the sweetest look to celebrate the season.

Retro Love

Belt your cardigan at your waist to create a slimmer silhouette.

Pop red with pink. In this case, I used my rose gold Laura Lobdell ring to play into the warmth of the red.

Button where you belt the cardigan to both smooth the layers and style them effortlessly.

All Bundled up

Scarves are meant to lay naturally. Don't fuss about where each piece lands.
Even out the length on both ends just enough to weight it, so it doesn't unravel from around your neck. Fluff up the middle and let it go.

Mix chunky textures with both gold and silver to create a care-free fall look.

Add booties to a cropped pant to make your look more relaxed for business casual occasions.

Use your bright cardigan as a pop of color on warm or cool neutrals.

Leggings are the perfect partner for your knee-high boots.

Add a hat for a night out downtown.

endless summer

Pick the perfect dress by using the colors in your accessories and cardigan to guide you. Red and green are complimentary colors, so they pair easily.

When the weather allows, don't shy away from open-toed shoes.
You can still rock them in this heat.

Want more style in your wardrobe? Let's chat. I would love to hear more about your unique and deeply personal style. I'll create a wardrobe full of outfits and clothes you love and love to wear.

GIC Gift Guide

Thoughtful gift giving is a win-win situation. When you get a gift you love, it makes you feel appreciated by the giver. When you give a great gift, you relish in the joy that comes with makes someone feel special.

There's that warm, cuddly heart-filled-with-joy, big-smile-on-your-face thing that happens, which is one of the most pleasant and wonderful parts of the holidays. It's love, gratitude and celebration all wrapped up with a big bow on top.

I've put together a list of my favorite gifts this season that are considerate, fun and work for all the different types of women on your list.

It's the little details that count, and with Kayu clutches, they'll add a big pop to any outfit. Whether it's a straw clutch for the beach or a brass-and-shell evening bag (below left), these gems don't skimp on the personality.

Each bag is uniquely imagined, thus there is something here for the variety of of different gals on your list: your preppy mother-in-law, your elegant mother, your quirky sister or your sporty best friend.

3. The Blanket Scarf

The thought of a blanket scarf makes me want to curl up on the couch with a glass of red wine and a Netflix movie. What I love about these is that they are just as elegant as they are comfy. One of my clients is heading to Italy next month, so I packed one of these in her suitcase, but this piece could just as easily work when you're running to the grocery store or at the kids' sporting events.

This is a good surprise for the people on your list that appreciate practical gifts. There are many places the sensible gal can wear this, while keeping warm and effortlessly cute. These accessories are also very moderately priced, so if you're looking to spend a little less on a friend, a cousin or for a gift-exchange, this is a great present.

If you follow my Instagram, you know I rave about this jewelry all the time. Nina, the owner and designer, is highly creative with the pieces she makes. I also love that each design is both fashion-forward and easily wearable for every day occasions. Whether you're gifting this to a 19-year-old or a 69-year-old, they will love the delicate nature and super chic art that is Psyche Jewelry.

Plump. Pout. Kiss. Repeat.

Valentine’s Day is one of my favorite holidays, but probably not for the reason you'd expect.  I'm admittedly not the girliest of girls, but I can’t skip an opportunity to mix as many shades of red and pink together as possible. I love the vibrancy, the enthusiasm, and the passion of Valentine's Day. I like to get festive with my colors.

Last week a friend asked how my husband and I plan celebrate.  Does any other question come with more expectation behind it than that?! Always quick to divert, I spouted off how I plan to use the greeting card holiday as an opportunity to devour loads of chocolate. And as a feminist, I said I planned to purchase the chocolates myself, simply out of principle.

I cannot lie. I'm one of those types. I act like my only interest in Valentine's Day is the sweet treats, but when the day arrives, I'm a total sap. I'm going to want to get dolled up and have a night out. What actually came to mind when she asked my plans was my clothes and all the colors.

Naturally, the shade of lipstick was top of mind along with a dress, heels, and lingerie. There's no better time than Valentine's to rock a killer red lip and feel like your most fabulous self (in the shade that most flatters you). Even if a date night is not your activity of choice this Sunday, you deserve to feel sexy. Red lips will do the trick.

Let’s talk undertones. Like all beauty, its what's underneath the surface that counts. In case you don't know what undertones you have, lets do a quick assessment. Turn your palm face up. Look at the tips of your fingers. What colors do you see?

Do you see more purple, blue and deeper reds? If so, you might lean more toward cool undertones.

Do you see more orange, yellow or coral? If so, you might lean more toward warm undertones.

And if it's strictly red, you might have more neutral undertones.  Let's go from there!

for cool undertones:

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how raspberry hues and merlot hues will complement those with cool undertones.

for warm undertones:

Raquel Greer Gordian explains how warm undertones are complemented well by oranges, rubies, and reds.

A neutral choice:

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how neutral tones are complemented by bright rosy shades, as well as a classic cherry or brick red shade.

Cool undertones, I'm looking at you. Think: raspberry hues that will add pinks to milky complexions, and merlot for a striking contrast.

Warm undertones, you're next. Don't be scared to add a touch of orange to your palette! Or, is a matte ruby red more your style? And don’t rule out the warmth of the perfect plum.

To all the neutral tones: If you lean more in the direction of pretty in pink, find a bright rosy shade.  If red is more your style, go with a classic cherry or brick red.

Your style is a direct reflection of what makes you unique and what inspires you. This Valentine's Day, go bold with a shade that makes you feel romantic and perfectly suits your color palette.

Your Perfect Shade of Red

Valentine's Day is almost here, and I am so excited! It's one more excuse to throw on a dress in my favorite color, coral. Red may not be your favorite, but know that you can wear it. Red is energetic, sexy, powerful. It can be used for so many different purposes, but for V-Day, it'll be the perfect piece to seduction your honey.

The key to wearing red is finding your ideal hue.

So to help you find your perfect red this holiday, I've put together a little roadmap to lead you from discovering your coloring to picking your perfect outfit...

Color Palette: Deep, Cool

YOUR RED: BLUSH, Ballet pink

Now, I would love to hear from you! Which shade of red is perfect for you? Make sure to comment below and tell me how you'll rock a red outfit this Valentine's Day!

New Year, New You...Not Quite Yet.

So you've rung in the New Year by eating and drinking your weight in cookies, crab cakes, and cocktails. Hopefully you're already on your way to a full detox, but until you're back to the pre-foodbaby weight, here's a couple ways to disguise that pudge from all that fudge.

Dark Colors

Dark colors to the rescue! No matter if it's black, grey, navy, or even burgundy, live in it. We all know dark colors camouflage whatever's underneath them, so make sure you dress up the darks with pieces specifics to your body type. For instance:

If you're an apple, don't just throw on a pair of black leggings. You're hiding your best asset. Instead, pair a bright pant with a simple black sweater. The pop of color will not only flatter the part of your body where you gain weight, it will draw attention to your slimmer features.

                                  J.Crew Campbell Capri Pant

                                 J.Crew Campbell Capri Pant

For hourglass, always accentuate the waist, and pair a dark sweater or dress with a dark belt. You tend to gain weight in the middle too, so there's a delicate balance between showing your shape and covering the wobbly bits.

Lene Dress by Maeve at Anthropologie

Lene Dress by Maeve at Anthropologie

Skip The Potato Sack.

Despite popular belief, a sack of an outfit will make you look LARGER, much larger. Instead, stick to something form-fitting that doesn't have the suction of an octopus to it. As Marilyn once said, "Your clothes should be tight enough to show you're a woman, but loose enough to show you're a lady."

Create Inside Lines.

People will look where you want them to, if you help them. Drawing their eyes to the inside of your body will create the illusion of a slimmer silhouette. Strong vertical, colorful lines on a dress or the lapel of a blazer will do the trick.

Don't Forget Your SHAPEWEAR.

Most of us have it, though it tends to be tucked away in the underwear drawer for special events. Don't be afraid to use this tool for every event from networking to business formal to happy hour. You have it for a reason. Now use it.

Deconstructing Your NYE Look

How do you bring 2015 in with a bang? Learn to seamlessly coordinate the various elements that make up an outfit. Here are five things to zero-in on to be NYE prepped and ready.

5. HAIR

Hair is such an important part of any look because hair can make or break an outfit. If your hair's a hot mess, you can forget about anyone noticing anything other than that. For NYE, try something you rarely do. Create retro curls, put it up in an elegant bun, or incorporate a boho braid.

This little detail doesn't go unnoticed. It's the icing on the cake. Just like the rest of the look, the nails must match. Go RED for a ballroom bash, go GOLD for a house party, go BLACK for an underground spot, and go PURPLE for an eclectic restaurant (that's where I'll be).

Go big or go home. There is a very specific pair of shoes I dust off for this occasion every year. To give you an idea of what they look like, they also double as my Vegas heels.  If you also have that special pair of metallic, no less than 4' heels, pull them out. NYE is the perfect time for over-the-top fashion. After all, you'll only be bringing in 2015 once.

Despite the decadent nature of all the other elements of your outfit, keep the accessories to a minimum. Perhaps a cuff? Or knuckle rings? Or try something new this year: flash tattoos! Visit Headdress on South Lamar to find your perfect pack.

Of course clothing is #1 because it will bring everything together. Whether you're in pastels or pewter, there is one thing to consider: the formality of your event. If you're at a NYE cocktail party or wedding, don't come in something less formal because you didn't plan ahead. Figure it out now, before you're scatter-brained the night of. And don't forget! Your layers should match the event too.
