How To Style A Black Turtleneck In 3 Fresh Ways For Fall 2018

The black turtleneck is a useful staple to have in almost any wardrobe. Like many items in your closet, though, it’s easy to get stuck in the ways that you wear it. Continuously styling one piece the same way can leave you feeling drained and unexcited about something that's super versatile.

Which is why this week on Studio 512, I’m talkin’ black turtlenecks!

Fall is the perfect time to explore your style by repurposing this classic piece in cute, comfortable, and fun outfits for fall.

Watch the video to learn three fresh ways to wear your black turtleneck and make the most out of it this season.

5 Essential Sweaters for Fall 2018

Nothing makes me more excited for fall than pulling out my sweaters and styling them into comfy, cute outfits. While you might recycle some oldies from year to year, bringing in some fresh sweaters will liven up your closet and get you in the mood for pumpkin spice and everything nice to come.

Here’s my list of the 5 sweaters that would be the perfect addition to any wardrobe this fall.

THE HIGH NECK

Whether a turtleneck or funnel neck, this sweater style will add a sophisticated pop to any closet. Throw on a blazer over top for the office or add jean shorts and heels for a fun date night look.

THE DEEP V

If high neck feels daring to you, introduce the deep V-neck to your closet first. V-neck is one of the most flattering necklines, because it can make your neck look elongated while exposing one of the slimmest parts of your upper body. In short, you’ll feel awesome wearing it. Pair it with a triple-strand gold necklace and ripped jeans for the weekend or a simple pencil pant and powerful pump for the office.

Worried about showing too much skin at work? Add a neutral tank underneath or add a hook-and-eye clasp an inch from the bottom of the V for more coverage at the office.

THE LONG CARDIGAN

Love love love this piece, because it’s so much fun to style into outfits for day and evening. Play with the proportion by adding a mini dress underneath and knee-high boots for night or go sporty with it during the day by adding straight-leg jeans, stacked-heel booties and a vintage tee.

THE COZY PULLOVER

The classic pullover is the most nostalgic sweater for me, because it feels like the perfect piece to wear when you’re sitting by the fire or cooking up a Thanksgiving feast. To keep it relaxed, pair it with distressed skinny jeans and velvet fashion sneakers. To make it eclectic, add a leather mini skirt and cowboy boots.

THE COLLEGIATE CLASSIC

This retro style is great for Austin, because it’s easy to pop on and off with any change in temperature. Make is elegant for the office by adding a cream-color button-down and a navy pencil skirt. Give it a downtown vibe by adding a body suit, flare jeans and pointed-toe animal print pumps.

ATX Event Styling: The Trail of Lights

The Trails of Lights is by far one of my favorite annual Austin activities. I look forward to it ALL. YEAR. LONG. I grew up in Austin, so the nostalgia and fond memories are enough to bring me back year after year.

The energy, the scenery and the people watching make for an iconic Austin tradition that's perfect to visit with friends, family or a date.

And while it's easy to say that casual occasions (like this one) don't need your full fashion attention, they do.

To feel good anytime, anywhere...you need to look good.

Which is why I'm talking about it this week on the #GreerGuidetoStyle. Watch the video below and leave me a comment about what you're going to be rocking for this season's stroll through Zilker Park.

How to Pack for Thanksgiving Weekend

It's that time of year again... the holidays are officially upon us! Are you (and your stomach!) ready for Thanksgiving?

Packing for the long holiday weekend can be daunting, but we've got you covered. All of the elements on our list will fit perfectly in your carry-on bag, so you can worry about what's important on Thanksgiving like what you're eating, and not what you're wearing. :)

The Elements:

Jeans

Jeans are ideal for all climates and lend themselves well to the fun, laid-back holiday that Thanksgiving is. Make sure yours have at least a little bit of stretch to accommodate your Turkey Day meal. :)

Lightweight Sweater

Choose a sweater in an unexpected neutral (blush and slate gray are fantastic!) that will work double-time for your suitcase, serving as the base for your outfits with jeans.

Vests

Vests are perfect for adding another layer of warmth into the mix on those colder days. Choose a heavier vest for your travel day to layer over your lightweight sweater: it's a great way to stay just warm enough in the airport and en route to your destination without adding the bulk of a heavy coat.

Relaxed Dress

A fun, festive dress is a great way to express your own personal style on Thanksgiving. You'll be just dressed up enough, yet casual and comfortable enough to really kick back and enjoy the holiday with your loved ones.

Overcoat

An overcoat in a bright color or unexpected pattern lets you show off your personal style, even when the temperatures dip below freezing. Going the vintage route is a failsafe way to snag a real gem that expresses your style.

Bright Scarf and Gloves

Accessories are often overlooked, but are *the* best way to both punch up an otherwise neutral look and serve as a practical (and packable!) way to create some variance in your look. Adding a bright pop of color in a scarf or earmuffs is the perfect finish to your holiday look.

Versatile Boots

One great pair of comfortable boots is all you'll need for the long weekend! They work seamlessly with all of the outfits you can put together with all of the pieces above: no need to pack multiple pairs of shoes that will take up valuable real estate in your suitcase!

Rock Your Turtleneck Every Day of The Week

It's finally cold in Austin! While many of us wished for this for so long, now that it's happening, it requires you to put in some energy and thought into creating layered looks you'll love.

It's time to get comfy, feel cozy and snuggle up to some new styling tools in our wardrobe. One is those tools is the turtleneck. It's classic, but like anything classic, it can easily feel boring. Adding a few modern touches and getting a little creative can make it feel fresh and fashion-forward every day of the week.

This week I've created three outfits for three situations you may find yourself in. Try them out, give them your personal touch and allow yourself to be adventurous. That's what style is all about: bringing yourself into your wardrobe.

WEEKEND WEAR

BUSINESS PROFESSIONAL

How to Pack for This Weekend

If you're visiting the relatives (or anyone, for that matter) over the holidays, this one's for you. If you're not traveling for the holidays, welp, don't worry: there's plenty here for you too.

Planning out exactly what you'll wear over the holiday weekend means there's one less thing to worry about. And travel or not, we all need that.

So here it is. Signed, sealed, delivered for you to recreate from the contents of your own closet.

Keep it simple. Don't overwork it.

What's on the style agenda:

Day 1:
JEANS-SWEATER-BOOTIES

Day 2:
Day -- LEGGINGS-SWEATER-BOOTIES-TUNIC TOP
Night--LBD-SWEATER-NECKLACE-BOOTIES

Day 3:
JEANS-SWEATER-BOOTIES

And here are the steps to make sure everything works...

Step #1
Choose your jeans wisely.

I chose my Madewell flare jeans for this trip, because they're comfortable, easy to wear with boots and thick enough that I know I'll be warm.

In addition to blue jeans, add a pair of leggings to your carry-on. Packing the perfect suitcase is about finding the sweet spot between having too much and too little. Leggings will ensure you have a back up if you want to switch things up.

STEP #2
Pull your favorite Classic sweaters.

One of the biggest issues you encounter when packing is that you pull what you don't love. You get on vacation, open your bag and go "why did I bring that?!" Listen to your intuition. Go with what you know you'll wear and what you love to wear. Especially with a short trip, your choices will be limited.

So be cutthroat.

Both sweaters should versatile; easy to dress up or dress down. Each should be in good condition, up-to-date and versatile.

Note: No sweatshirts allowed!

STEP #3
DON'T FORGET YOUR Accessories!

I've said it a billion times, and yes, I'm saying it again...no outfit is complete without accessories! Even if you're spending the holidays at your great aunt's house, your running-around-her-town outfit must include accessories.

For a crew neck sweater, go with a bib-necklace or beaded necklace, which accentuates the shape of the collar. A v-neck is great with a long or short pendant necklace to highlight the slimming silhouette of the v-neck.

I highly recommend packing two necklaces, so you can mix and match your accessories with different outfits. Multiple accessories will ensure you don't get bored with your look.

In addition, add stud earrings for every daytime outing and a pair of statement earrings for night.

A pop of color necklace for my crew neck sweater!

The soft hues of my pendant necklace and v-neck sweater balance each other well.

The soft hues of my pendant necklace and v-neck sweater balance each other well.

STEP #4
Wait! YOU'll need more ACCESSORIES!

Don't forget your scarves. I'm packing two, so I can choose a scarf depending on my mood. The colorful one is for my playful moods, the gray is for my serious moods. And yes, you will have many moods when hanging with family. Style is all about creativity, so don't be afraid to mix and match your scarves with both sweaters. It's eclectic, fun and gives each outfit a fresh feel.

If you're going somewhere reeeeeally cold, pick gloves and a hat to match each scarf.

Fold them into your suitcase messy or clean. Most heavy scarves will remain wrinkle-free, so you'll be set to throw them on when you land.

STEP #5
ADD A HOLIDAY DRESS in the mix.

You'll probably have a dressy dinner one or two nights this weekend. Bring your little black dress for this occasion. If you're going out to dinner, rather than staying in, throw your crew neck sweater on top. Both necklaces will work for the crew neck sweater, so put on a different necklace at night than the one you had on all day. Add your statement earrings, and the outfit is done!

STEP #6
DON'T FORGET THE EXTRAS!

  • Bring two easy to throw on tees or casual blouses for under your sweaters. Make sure they're presentable. In other words, if you get hot and take off your sweater, you shouldn't be embarrassed wearing them.

  • Bring one tunic top (aka a long top that covers your derrière) to go over leggings.

  • Add your winter coat to the mix to keep you warm all weekend.

  • Bring one pair of booties. You can mix black and brown, so if you feel up to a living outside the box, pair brown!

  • Traveling for more than a few days? Double up on everything.

4 Ways to Wear Your Holiday Sweater

Red is a color I love to wear year round, but when it gets to the holiday season, I am more excited than ever to wear one of my favorite staple colors. I've created the looks below with a bright, bold piece, but even if your go-to cardigan is a neutral like black or tan, it will do perfectly. Dress it up, dress it down. It's the sweetest look to celebrate the season.

Retro Love

Belt your cardigan at your waist to create a slimmer silhouette.

Pop red with pink. In this case, I used my rose gold Laura Lobdell ring to play into the warmth of the red.

Button where you belt the cardigan to both smooth the layers and style them effortlessly.

All Bundled up

Scarves are meant to lay naturally. Don't fuss about where each piece lands.
Even out the length on both ends just enough to weight it, so it doesn't unravel from around your neck. Fluff up the middle and let it go.

Mix chunky textures with both gold and silver to create a care-free fall look.

Add booties to a cropped pant to make your look more relaxed for business casual occasions.

WEEKEND WEAR

Use your bright cardigan as a pop of color on warm or cool neutrals.

Leggings are the perfect partner for your knee-high boots.

Add a hat for a night out downtown.

endless summer

Pick the perfect dress by using the colors in your accessories and cardigan to guide you. Red and green are complimentary colors, so they pair easily.

When the weather allows, don't shy away from open-toed shoes.
You can still rock them in this heat.

There's that warm, cuddly heart-filled-with-joy, big-smile-on-your-face thing that happens, which is one of the most pleasant and wonderful parts of the holidays. It's love, gratitude and celebration all wrapped up with a big bow on top.

3. The Blanket Scarf

The thought of a blanket scarf makes me want to curl up on the couch with a glass of red wine and a Netflix movie. What I love about these is that they are just as elegant as they are comfy. One of my clients is heading to Italy next month, so I packed one of these in her suitcase, but this piece could just as easily work when you're running to the grocery store or at the kids' sporting events.

This is a good surprise for the people on your list that appreciate practical gifts. There are many places the sensible gal can wear this, while keeping warm and effortlessly cute. These accessories are also very moderately priced, so if you're looking to spend a little less on a friend, a cousin or for a gift-exchange, this is a great present.

I also love that each design is both fashion-forward and easily wearable for every day occasions. Shop Austin: The October Boutique

Adelante

The concept of Adelante was dreamed up over three decades ago by the current owner's mother. When Adelante first opened in the 1970s, it was located in San Antonio, and many of the pieces that made up the boutique were inspired by or hand-picked during the owner's trips to Mexico.

The store moved to Austin 25 years ago and has since expanded its labels and space. Still, there are many pieces in this boutique that are definitively south-of-the-border style: embroidered mumus, off-the-shoulder blouses and jewel tones prints. These vibrant pieces separate Adelante from other shops in Austin.

When walking into this boutique, it's hard not to think Adelante aims to sum up Austin style. Luckily, they do an impeccable job at it.

With everything from the boho blouses to the upbeat casual looks to the vintage embroidered pillow cases to art deco candles, they manage a cohesive aesthetic of clothing and home goods. Much like Austin, it is eclectic and full of energy, but still has a clear identity. It is even known for bring in a collection of burnt-orange-game-day-girl-gear on August 1st, which takes up half of the entire store (and the store is big!)

This store is tucked away a bit from the road on 38th St., but if you venture in, you will not be disappointed. In addition to all the playful pieces from brands you know (Johnny Was, Lush, Lucky Brand, Free People) and many you may not, this boutique has exceptional gifts (I got many of my holiday presents here last year.) If you walk in, you won't walk out empty handed, so proceed with caution...

Take Your Wardrobe from Winter to Spring with These Six Looks

I've learned to always carry a purse big enough to fit a sweater, because every afternoon, that's exactly where my sweater ends up. Austin's weather is unpredictable, to say the least, and the past two weeks have been the worst of it. I'm really never sure what I'm going to get when I step out of my apartment. Even if the day starts out at 40 degrees, you could be sweating by the end of it.

So! Because Austin likes to keep us guessing, I've put together looks to incorporate both winter and spring pieces for a chic style statement for whatever weather comes our way.

How to Give Your Workwear a Facelift in 5 Minutes

I’m a big believer in the fact that making a few simple changes in anyone’s closet can make a huge difference, which is why I’m so excited to write this post this week. When it comes to styling a look for work or play, how you put it together is half of the battle. The other half is investing in quality pieces. Together, they are the key ingredients to creating the ideal outfit.

I've put together some tips to take your average workwear from predictable to eye-catching. Because to get what you want in life, you must always stand out.

Mix Neutrals Like a Pro

Forget what they taught you. Abandon how you've always seen it put together.

SWAP: Black AND Grey for Black & Cream

SWAP: Charcoal AND Light Grey for Charcoal & Brown

SWAP: Black and White for White & Cream

SWAP: Brown and Cream for Brown & Black

Add a Colorful Pump to a Staple Suit

I know you have a pair of fabulous pumps that need a little love. Now is the time. Don't be scared to incorporate more fun weekend wear into your workwear.

More personality in your clothes gives people more hints about who you are. The better they know you, the more likely they are to trust you and work with you.

And if you don't have them lying around, here's a few I've picked just for you...Click the picks to peruse.

For the Traditional

For the Creative

FOR THE ROMANTIC                            FOR THE POWERHOUSE

Ditch the Pants. Don a Power Dress.

Now of course, you've worn a dress to work before. You may have a very favorite that you wear over and over again or something you're sure looks good that you wear over and over again (those may be the same thing). The difference in the power dress is how you're wearing it. Instead of a cardigan or trench coat, pair it with the jacket from your power suit.

The jacket will give you an assertive presence, while the dress will add the pop of personality.

Now I would love to know...were these tips and tricks helpful? Will you don a power dress or vibrant pump? Comment below and tell me how your workwear got a facelift!

5 Essential Pieces for Your Winter Vacation

I have to admit, it has taken me a long time to figure out exactly how to pack the perfect suitcase. Everything I could need ends up in my luggage, but somehow I don't manage to wear everything that snuck in there.

That's because on vacation, when everything is supposed to be easy, I so often wear the same outfit twice. I know, it seems like I should be ashamed. When I'm packing, I have the best of intentions. I imagine myself sipping cocktails on a beach in a full length dress and heels...though in actuality, I am still sipping cocktails, but it's in the most comfortable dress I own. You know what? That's OK. Vacation is about kicking back, relaxing. In reality, style should reflect your state of mind. When I remember that, I realize it's OK to (in this instance) wear the same thing twice.

Of course, that doesn't mean you can't still look good while you relax. Being comfortable and looking good while you do it will make you more excited about your vacation. Whether you are at the beach or on the ski slopes, here are five versatile pieces with looks built around them that I would recommend bringing.

Heading to the Slopes?          Heading to the Sand?

Now I would love to know! Which travel essential sneaks into your suitcase the most? Make sure to comment below how you incorporated some of these essentials on your next winter vacation!

The Fabric of Society: Fashion and Style Throughout the Twentieth Century

Fashion evolves. The work of every generation is broken apart by newcomers, who discard what they dislike and use the remaining rubble to build the next generation’s styles and trends. One thing I’ve always loved about fashion is that it is an expression of everything that's going on around us. Social, political, and religious movements are reflected in what each generation wears.

When I think about MLK Day, my first reaction is to consider the developments in fashion that stem from the remarkable, unprecedented change that occurred in that decade. Then I feel guilty. How shallow can I be, considering fashion in the context of the greatest social movement in history? But putting my self-consciousness aside, truth be told, it is astounding. How quickly the conservative, traditionalism of the 1950’s shifted into the forward-thinking 1960s, only to be radically transformed into the free-loving 1970s.

Fashion of course can never fully honor the work, or the pain and suffering, of those who fought during the civil rights movement. But it is fascinating to study the broad-reaching impact generational change has. To honor that, I’ve pulled together a few looks that pay homage to each generation and the change they saw.

1950's

1960'S

1970's

1980's

1990's

Now I would love to hear from you! What are some trends that you remember from the twentieth century? Leave a comment below and tell me how you might pull some outfit inspirations from past decades!

New Year, New You...Not Quite Yet.

So you've rung in the New Year by eating and drinking your weight in cookies, crab cakes, and cocktails. Hopefully you're already on your way to a full detox, but until you're back to the pre-foodbaby weight, here's a couple ways to disguise that pudge from all that fudge.

Dark Colors

Dark colors to the rescue! No matter if it's black, grey, navy, or even burgundy, live in it. We all know dark colors camouflage whatever's underneath them, so make sure you dress up the darks with pieces specifics to your body type. For instance:

If you're an apple, don't just throw on a pair of black leggings. You're hiding your best asset. Instead, pair a bright pant with a simple black sweater. The pop of color will not only flatter the part of your body where you gain weight, it will draw attention to your slimmer features.

                                  J.Crew Campbell Capri Pant

                                 J.Crew Campbell Capri Pant

For hourglass, always accentuate the waist, and pair a dark sweater or dress with a dark belt. You tend to gain weight in the middle too, so there's a delicate balance between showing your shape and covering the wobbly bits.

Lene Dress by Maeve at Anthropologie

Lene Dress by Maeve at Anthropologie

Skip The Potato Sack.

Despite popular belief, a sack of an outfit will make you look LARGER, much larger. Instead, stick to something form-fitting that doesn't have the suction of an octopus to it. As Marilyn once said, "Your clothes should be tight enough to show you're a woman, but loose enough to show you're a lady."

Create Inside Lines.

People will look where you want them to, if you help them. Drawing their eyes to the inside of your body will create the illusion of a slimmer silhouette. Strong vertical, colorful lines on a dress or the lapel of a blazer will do the trick.

Don't Forget Your SHAPEWEAR.

Most of us have it, though it tends to be tucked away in the underwear drawer for special events. Don't be afraid to use this tool for every event from networking to business formal to happy hour. You have it for a reason. Now use it.

Dress to Impress at the Holiday Party

The key to being stylish is being unpredictable, whether you’re at the office party or a friend’s holiday shindig. Being unpredictable doesn’t mean dressing like someone else. It means you avoid the drab, campy, overworked holiday costume of years past. This year, you should stand out… in the right ways.

I’ve put together a few ideas that will bring a little whimsy to your next holiday function.

Skip the red and green. Stick to black and white.

Flip a Classic.

Whether it's your mother's pearls or a vintage brooch, it can be incorporated into your outfit in a fun, exciting way.

Bring the Bling.

This is the only time of the year when tacky can turn chic. Embrace it. Costume jewelry is the perfect touch for any party look that A. won't burn a hole in your pocket and B. gets you in the mood to celebrate.

Dress Up Your Denim.

Denim can be worn to many semi-formal occasions as long as you follow one rule: The denim cannot be the star. A subtle dark blue or black denim paired with vibrant heels or a sequin sweater allows you to be comfortable and edgy while chatting around the punch bowl.

Family, Feasting, and Fit: Picking the Perfect Pant for Thanksgiving

I consider myself one of the lucky ones. My mother is a chef and both of my grandmothers are exceptionally talented in the kitchen, so my Thanksgiving is predictably delicious. I, however, am not quite as talented in the kitchen. I've got the staples down for weeknights in my house (tacos, pasta, chicken...), but my contribution to Thanksgiving usually involves the pies (picking them up, not baking them).

Whether you're the culinary genius in your house or the couch potato this Thanksgiving, it's important to be comfortable. The Thanksgiving outfit plan is surprisingly important because cooking, couching, and eating all require a bit of stretch to your outfit. Also, you may find yourself in some family photos that are sure to stick around for a long time (either on Instagram or in your grandma's house).

So, I'm dedicating this week to making you look and feel fabulous for your big feast, and there's one element that's a must: LEGGINGS.

Picking the right pair of leggings, and the appropriate outfit to wear with them, depends on everything from your body type to your color palette. It's not always easy. I've laid out a few looks for a broad range of body types. But to find out how to create the best look for you, schedule an image assessment with me.

Now, I would love to hear from you! Leave a comment below to tell me how you managed to find the perfect Thanksgiving pant!

The 5 Essential Sweaters for Your Closet

We all fill our closet with a certain level of impulse buys. I always find myself buying a plethora of loud and out-there sweaters. While a trendy piece can seem fun for a season or two, it eventually seems outdated and uninteresting. You need staple pieces. You especially need staple sweaters because sweaters have a big task to accomplish. They have to work well with many other things in your closet: workwear, jackets, pants, dresses, skirts...pretty much everything except your swim suit. Thus, I've dedicated this week to the five essential sweaters you need in your closet.

5. V-neck

The V-neck is naturally slimming and versatile, both of which are important things for almost anyone's lifestyle. You're ready for work or play.

PERK: It doubles as a top when you aren't in the mood to handle layering.

JUST ADD: dark denim + a pointed toe pump

4. Shawl Collar

This sweater is all about the one thing we all love about sweaters: the COZY factor. Slip into this outfit, and you'll remember exactly why you love this season.

PERK: It's perfect when running to the grocery store or a walk in the park.

JUST ADD: classic white tee + colorful pant + infinity scarf

3. Maxi Sweater

One of my favorite elements to play with in style is proportion. The Maxi Sweater gives any outfit a playful touch. Dress it up, dress it down. It's a piece that works well with your other closet classics.

PERK:  This simple piece can become eye-catching just because of it's relationship to other parts of your outfit.

JUST ADD: mini skirt + booties +  graphic tee

2. Cropped Sweater

This is my favorite piece during the couple weeks when it's not quite necessary to have something heavier.

PERK: This sweater accentuates your sexy, feminine shape.

JUST ADD: High-waisted skirt + flats

1. Cardigan

This is a piece for all occasions. Whether you love neutrals or a big pop of color, add this piece to any outfit for a sophisticated finish.

PERK: It goes with everything from grandma's pearls to a body con dress.

JUST ADD: tank + midi skirt + statement necklace

Now, I would love to hear from you! Tell me in the comment section below which sweater essential you'll be rocking this fall!
