Summer Scarf Styled.

Last week we focused on how you can enhance an outfit with oodles of accessories for the days when it’s too hot to layer. This week, I’m sticking to 1 single accessory and showing you 5 exciting ways to wear it.

I never know what is going to inspire an outfit. Is it a certain color that fits my mood that day? Is it an event I’m going to? Or maybe it’s what I feel most confident in on a stressful day. Sometimes, a single accessory can inspire a week’s worth of outfits. That was the case this week, and my inspiration came from an old scarf that made me feel playful and summer-y.

Typically, when I think of scarves I also think of Fall and booties and comfy sweaters. Last week, though, I was doing some cleaning and found that small square scarf, which had been a gift from my mom probably 15 years ago. I was thrilled! It’s very light-weight and perfect for the summer season, so I made a week’s worth of outfits inspired by it!

For a more casual look, I absolutely loved tying this scarf in my hair. I felt reminiscent of the 50s and completely modern at the same time. This technique can work for any hairstyle: short, long, hair up, or hair down…the key is finding what makes you feel quirky and confident.

For the days when I want to brighten up a black dress, an arm party of bangles and a gold watch is just the way to go! Rolling up my bright red scarf thin and wrapping it around my wrist several times created a blissful assortment of texture and color.

I am lucky enough to work from home most days, but when I do venture into the office I get to intermingle my love for looking professional and the casual dress code of the office. Tying my scarf in a bandit knot under my chambray button up struck the perfect balance this week.

Tying this scarf in an adorable bow around my purse allowed me bring a pop of color to the nude gator bag.  Seeing the scarf cheered me up all day, even though I wasn’t actually wearing it!

Tying a scarf in a square knot around your neck is one of my favorite classic, nostalgic looks. I always want to feel as graceful and charming as I did while wearing this floral scarf. I paired it with a simple white dress because we all know who the star of this outfit is.

The Perfect Sunnies for Your Face Shape

When it comes to accessorizing, Iris Apfel said it best, “More is more and less is a bore." Style is all about adding personal touches that take your outfit from run-of-the-mill to out-of-this-world. During these sunny summer days, an easy way to turn your outfit up a notch is through sunglasses. The key to finding the right shades is identifying your face shape. That’s where we come in. Your style future is looking bright!

While there is something to be said for wearing whatever makes you feel like a #bossbabe, we want to educate you on how to tell your own face shape and then determine the best sunglasses for your sense of style.

Square Shaped Faces

Do you have…

A strong jaw line that evenly lines up with your temples, giving you four symmetrical points?

Look for…

Round, oval, or cat eye sunglasses.

By adding soft lines to a strongly outlined face, you find a striking balance.

Stick with curves, not straight lines. Otherwise, you run the risk of looking robotic.

Heart Shaped Faces

If your forehead is wide and round at your hair line and your chin comes to a point, your face is heart-shaped.

Look for…

Sunnies with elongated bottoms. Wearing sunglasses with thin temples will also accentuate your striking cheekbones.

Oversized sunglasses can make your forehead look larger, so make sure the size of your sunnies matches the scale of your face.

Diamond Shaped Faces

Do you have…

Prominent cheeks? If your face is widest just below your eye line and you have a shorter forehead and chin, you have a diamond shaped face.

Look for…

Pointed sunglasses to accentuate your cheekbones.

Top heavy frames show off your perfect pout!

Oval Shaped Faces

Do you have…

A longer face with narrow chin and cheeks?

Look for…

Wide frames to balance the length of your face.

Oval faces have the most leeway with what shape of sunglasses work. With all shapes though, strong details on the top of your sunglasses will bring the eye upward.

Round Shaped Faces

Do you have…

A soft face that is almost equal in length and width?

Look for…

Bold, rectangular lenses with thick temples

These sunglasses are large, in charge and work well since the sunglasses are so wide and angular!

Inverted Triangle Faces

Do you have…

A defined jaw line and a narrow forehead?

Look for…

Soft lines and top heavy frames.

These frames soften and narrow the chin, striking the perfect balance!

These round frames make a huge style statement!

A Dress in Three Acts

One thing my clients never say is that they don't have a favorite outfit. Everyone has a favorite outfit. No matter if function or high fashion is the most important component of what you wear to work or to play, we all reach for something in the morning.

The problem my clients face time and time again is the inability to style their wardrobe or their favorite outfit in any way outside of the box. A white shirt can easily work with black pants or a navy dress and a tan blazer can easily fit together, but finding an outfit that excites and surprises you and the people around you is another story.

Thus I found my topic for this month's post. Grab your favorite summer dress RIGHT NOW and pair it with something new, something you haven't thought of before.

I styled my favorite summer dress to give you some ideas on how to wear it from business to brunch. And don't forget to be brave! Your style is unique and specific to you. Treat it as so.

Casual look:

What to Wear for Weddings Galore

Repeat after me: "I will not wear the same boring thing to every wedding this year."

Wedding season is a funny one, because it's really not like any other occasion or seasonal event. Even my daily getup gets more thought than my wedding season one. For some reason, I am so distracted by gifts, travel, and agenda up until the day of the nuptials that picking any outfit is inevitably a last minute decision. No more.

This year is the year to find something you feel and look beautiful in. Now, to find that special something...There are a lot of factors to consider when putting together a look for a wedding.

The first is subtlety.

Be subtle, not too sexy, and as always, incredibly chic. This is probably the only non-work occasion where an outfit should be understated, because you never want to take attention away from the wedding dress and the bride. This rule applies to the dress, the jewelry and the shoes.

Having said that, your understated look may be someone else's over-the-top outfit. Stick to what you consider understated. Your style is your own, and even when toned down, you should still always be able to express it.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how subtlety is important in order to avoid taking attention away from the bride.
Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how you can still stick to what you consider understated and express your personal style.

The second is comfort.

I worry about being comfortable for the duration of a wedding much more than any other occasion, even if it's just as long. Perhaps it's the dancing or the amount of food that I'm predicting I'll eat or perhaps it's both. Either way, comfort is important. If you also relish the fact that dancing and food are the best parts of a wedding, I would give your dress a test run. Pop on some music and dance in it at home.

The third is environment.

Weddings are so often indoor and outdoor, so picking the right fabric and layering pieces is key to staying warm enough or cool enough wherever you are. Terrain is also a factor to consider. This year I have a few weddings where they were very specific about wearing shoes to fit the outdoor venue. Even if it isn't mentioned to you, the venue needs to be on your radar.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how the type of terrain the wedding will be in is important to consider when planning an outfit.

How to Style Your Classic Black Skirt in 5 Ways

There are only a few things that I think you absolutely need in your wardrobe. A black skirt is one of them. Leighelena carries jewelry made by many different designers, but the highlight are the pieces the store creates itself. I am a sucker for cocktail rings, and at Leighelena, there are rings that can be customized. Colorful, magnetic plates can be attached to the base of each ring, so you can match any ring to the look of your outfit. Going into this shop is a mood elevator, and if you're looking for fun jewelry, this is a good place to find it.

Take Your Wardrobe from Winter to Spring with These Six Looks

I've learned to always carry a purse big enough to fit a sweater, because every afternoon, that's exactly where my sweater ends up. Austin's weather is unpredictable, to say the least, and the past two weeks have been the worst of it. I'm really never sure what I'm going to get when I step out of my apartment. Even if the day starts out at 40 degrees, you could be sweating by the end of it.

So! Because Austin likes to keep us guessing, I've put together looks to incorporate both winter and spring pieces for a chic style statement for whatever weather comes our way.

FLOWERS & LEATHER

Winter Pieces: Leather Jacket + Infinity Scarf

Spring Pieces: Floral Dress + Open-Toe Pumps

Bad Romance

Winter Pieces: Oversized Cardigan + Booties

Spring Pieces: Graphic Tee + Floral Skirt

Dinner and A Movie

Winter Pieces: Jeans + Booties

Spring Pieces: Faux-Fur Vest + Silk Blouse

PASTELS AND SEASHELLS

Winter Pieces: Midi Skirt + Scarf

Spring Pieces: Light-Weight Cardigan + Sandals

The Girl in the Coffee Shop

Winter Piece: Heavy Cardigan

Spring Pieces: Flats + Mini Skirt

BELLINIS AT BRUNCH

Winter Pieces: Knee-High Boots + Overcoat

Spring Pieces: Shift Dress + Sunnies

The Best Lingerie Shops in Austin

Looking for lingerie feels different than any other shopping. Maybe it’s just the simple exhilaration of going out in public to search for something provocative that (I assume…) you will wear in private.

Whatever the case may be, for Valentine’s Day, you want to look sexy.

That’s why I scoured Austin to find the boutiques that specialize in the art of lingerie. Whether you’re looking for the most intricately hand-stitched corset or a simple, seductive bra and panty set, here is a list of ATX shops that should meet anyone’s V-Day needs.

What They Do Best

The staff was incredibly sweet and knowledgable. It was the kind of experience I want when I enter a lingerie boutique. It smelled amazing. There were candles lit, a beautiful table display, and many of the pieces were works of art. While most of their lingerie is on the pricier end, the sales associate was quick to inform me there are items for everyday use, like a classic bra and panty. She also mentioned that many of the Teddies pieces are for meant for life's most special moments. I definitely agree.

Interview with Elaine Wiart: Plus Size Image Consultant and Model

From having no choice but to wear mens’ jeans once upon a time to becoming a model and role model to plus-size women, Elaine Wiart has been through it all in the world of plus-size fashion. As a Montreal based consultant, Elaine founded CurvesnStyle to challenge and redefine the world’s perception of beauty. She is incredibly talented, driven, and stylish, and continues to impart her knowledge of plus-size fashion on everyone that comes across her path.

R: Define plus size vs. straight size.

E: Straight sizing is up to 12. Most stores that are plus size are going to carry 12+, but I like that designers now are doing clothes up to a size 16, 18.

R: So tell me a little bit about transitioning from working as a plus size model to working as a consultant to plus size women?

E: Being a model was good for me. I found it was possible to be plus size and fashionable, but it just was not enough. I wanted to help other plus size women, but I didn’t have the science behind me to help other people get dressed. That’s when I started studying image consulting. I went to Dominique [Isbecque] and FIT.

R: Would you say there’s anything different about dressing plus size women as opposed to straight sizing?

E: No, the principles are still the same. You are still going to be dressing a body shape, highlighting the assets, trying to not call attention to what you don’t want to show.

R: What would you say your biggest challenge is in doing plus size consulting?

E: It’s the lack of options. It’s much better than when I was 18.  I had to buy mens’ jeans. Now they do have a lot of options of jeans, but it can improve a lot.

R: Your favorite plus size designers?

E: Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren, Michael Kors, those are my favorite.

Those three are doing really well and have lines that are really affordable. There are other specialty stores like Lane Bryant too.

R: How do you manage your wardrobe in your daily routine?

E: When you organize your wardrobe with things that fit well, the process is really quick. I’m just going to dress based on the location and situation I’m attending.

R: What would be some tips you could give to plus size women?

E: First, try on, especially if you have no idea what you’re doing or what your body shape is.

Second, accessorize. Accessories are such an important thing.

Third, don’t hide. Plus size women try to hide their bodies and that makes them look older and bigger.

You don’t have to try to fit in the same thing that a skinny friend does. You need a bigger print, more proportional to your body. The little dots, little flowers don’t work. It’s going to make you look bigger.

R: What do you love about working with your clients?

E: It’s very rewarding when you find somebody who feels good about themselves when they wear the right clothes. Maybe months later you see someone in a grocery store, and the person looks much better. You see they’re paying attention to details you pointed out.
