How to Give Your Workwear a Facelift in 5 Minutes

I’m a big believer in the fact that making a few simple changes in anyone’s closet can make a huge difference, which is why I’m so excited to write this post this week. When it comes to styling a look for work or play, how you put it together is half of the battle. The other half is investing in quality pieces. Together, they are the key ingredients to creating the ideal outfit.

I've put together some tips to take your average workwear from predictable to eye-catching. Because to get what you want in life, you must always stand out.

Mix Neutrals Like a Pro

Forget what they taught you. Abandon how you've always seen it put together.

SWAP: Black AND Grey for Black & Cream

SWAP: Charcoal AND Light Grey for Charcoal & Brown

SWAP: Black and White for White & Cream

SWAP: Brown and Cream for Brown & Black

Add a Colorful Pump to a Staple Suit

I know you have a pair of fabulous pumps that need a little love. Now is the time. Don't be scared to incorporate more fun weekend wear into your workwear.

More personality in your clothes gives people more hints about who you are. The better they know you, the more likely they are to trust you and work with you.

And if you don't have them lying around, here's a few I've picked just for you...Click the picks to peruse.

For the Traditional

For the Creative

FOR THE ROMANTIC                            FOR THE POWERHOUSE

Ditch the Pants. Don a Power Dress.

Now of course, you've worn a dress to work before. You may have a very favorite that you wear over and over again or something you're sure looks good that you wear over and over again (those may be the same thing). The difference in the power dress is how you're wearing it. Instead of a cardigan or trench coat, pair it with the jacket from your power suit.

The jacket will give you an assertive presence, while the dress will add the pop of personality.

Now I would love to know...were these tips and tricks helpful? Will you don a power dress or vibrant pump? Comment below and tell me how your workwear got a facelift!

Dress to Impress at the Holiday Party

The key to being stylish is being unpredictable, whether you’re at the office party or a friend’s holiday shindig. Being unpredictable doesn’t mean dressing like someone else. It means you avoid the drab, campy, overworked holiday costume of years past. This year, you should stand out… in the right ways.

I’ve put together a few ideas that will bring a little whimsy to your next holiday function.

Skip the red and green. Stick to black and white.

Flip a Classic.

Whether it's your mother's pearls or a vintage brooch, it can be incorporated into your outfit in a fun, exciting way.

Bring the Bling.

This is the only time of the year when tacky can turn chic. Embrace it. Costume jewelry is the perfect touch for any party look that A. won't burn a hole in your pocket and B. gets you in the mood to celebrate.

Dress Up Your Denim.

Denim can be worn to many semi-formal occasions as long as you follow one rule: The denim cannot be the star. A subtle dark blue or black denim paired with vibrant heels or a sequin sweater allows you to be comfortable and edgy while chatting around the punch bowl.

Company Party Prepped and Ready

Though summer's almost over, company parties and BBQ's are still popping up. It’s always important to keep in mind that this is a business event, rather than social, so keep it simple, sophisticated, and stay summer ready!

·      NOT-TOO-SEXY:

The most important rule at these functions is to keep it not-too-sexy. This is work, which means this needs to be work appropriate. No mini-skirts. No backless shirts. No brightly colored bra- straps. No caking on the make-up.

If your outfit makes you think twice, follow your intuition. Just don’t do it.

·      SUMMER SANDALS:

This can be a very scary topic, considering both men and women sometimes don’t give their feet the TLC they’ll need to show up in public. A pedicure isn’t required, but everyone should keep their toes clean and clipped. Often times it’s the little things that matter, and in this case, this little thing could leave your co-workers wondering about your very questionable hygiene habits.

·      WEAR NATURAL FABRICS:

Come prepared to control the sweat factor. Natural fabrics provide air circulation and will dry quickly. Cotton and linen are the best choices, but silk is also good. If you wear silk, make sure it’s either very light (white, nude) or has a pattern. Pattern will distract from sweat.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how wedges and embellished sandals can provide comfort as well as style in outdoor terrains.

·      BE WEARY OF THE TERRAIN:

Proceed with caution if you want to wear heels. Mud can easily ruin a favorite pair. If you know it’s going to be dry, it’s still best to stick with a wedge. Wedges are more conservative and will provide greater comfort if it’s an all day event. An embellished sandal is also a great way to show off your stylish ways while making sure you aren’t over-dressed.

Check out these options for some fresh ideas. You can never have too many shoes…

·      MANAGE YOUR MANE:

Humidity and sweat can make you look like you just rolled out of bed. It’s best to go for a natural look (rather than glammed up goddess) so use light hold and taming product to keep the organic waves and whispies where you want them. A classic ponytail or a bun is also perfect or this event. With either of those options, pack a mini hairspray in your hobo to ensure little movement.

A metallic clasp like this one will add a little pop of style.

·      WEAR LIGHT-COLORED CLOTHES:

This is one that we are all familiar with, but it’s important not to forget. Dark colors easily become saturated by the hot rays, while light colors will prevent penetration. Pops of black, navy, and grey are fine, but try to avoid solid darks.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how staying away from running shoes and instead investing in a pair of versatile boat or walking shoes is important before a company party.

·      STAY AWAY FROM SNEAKERS:

Grandpa wears running shoes to a BBQ; you don’t. There are so many boat shoes and walking shoes that work for any style, so consider investing in one of these pairs before the event.
