A Dress in Three Acts

One thing my clients never say is that they don't have a favorite outfit. Everyone has a favorite outfit. No matter if function or high fashion is the most important component of what you wear to work or to play, we all reach for something in the morning.

The problem my clients face time and time again is the inability to style their wardrobe or their favorite outfit in any way outside of the box. A white shirt can easily work with black pants or a navy dress and a tan blazer can easily fit together, but finding an outfit that excites and surprises you and the people around you is another story.

Thus I found my topic for this month's post. Grab your favorite summer dress RIGHT NOW and pair it with something new, something you haven't thought of before.

I styled my favorite summer dress to give you some ideas on how to wear it from business to brunch. And don't forget to be brave! Your style is unique and specific to you. Treat it as so.

What to Wear for Weddings Galore

Repeat after me: "I will not wear the same boring thing to every wedding this year."

Wedding season is a funny one, because it's really not like any other occasion or seasonal event. Even my daily getup gets more thought than my wedding season one. For some reason, I am so distracted by gifts, travel, and agenda up until the day of the nuptials that picking any outfit is inevitably a last minute decision. No more.

This year is the year to find something you feel and look beautiful in. Now, to find that special something...There are a lot of factors to consider when putting together a look for a wedding.

The first is subtlety.

Be subtle, not too sexy, and as always, incredibly chic. This is probably the only non-work occasion where an outfit should be understated, because you never want to take attention away from the wedding dress and the bride. This rule applies to the dress, the jewelry and the shoes.

Having said that, your understated look may be someone else's over-the-top outfit. Stick to what you consider understated. Your style is your own, and even when toned down, you should still always be able to express it.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how subtlety is important in order to avoid taking attention away from the bride.

The second is comfort.

I worry about being comfortable for the duration of a wedding much more than any other occasion, even if it's just as long. Perhaps it's the dancing or the amount of food that I'm predicting I'll eat or perhaps it's both. Either way, comfort is important. If you also relish the fact that dancing and food are the best parts of a wedding, I would give your dress a test run. Pop on some music and dance in it at home.

The third is environment.

Weddings are so often indoor and outdoor, so picking the right fabric and layering pieces is key to staying warm enough or cool enough wherever you are. Terrain is also a factor to consider. This year I have a few weddings where they were very specific about wearing shoes to fit the outdoor venue. Even if it isn't mentioned to you, the venue needs to be on your radar.

How to Style Your Classic Black Skirt in 5 Ways

There are only a few things that I think you absolutely need in your wardrobe. A black skirt is one of them. No matter your style, body shape, or ideal color palette, a black skirt should live in your wardrobe because of its versatility. It's the perfect piece to pull out when getting dressed but feels like the most daunting task. For those days, here's exactly how to rock it:

To the Park

Add: Chambray Shirt + Hat + Graphic Tee + Fashion Sneakers

SXSW STYLE

It's coming whether you want it to or not. Some of us look forward to it and others cringe at the idea of the crowds. No matter the category you fall in to, it's essential to be stylish at SXSW.

Whether you're sipping cocktails at a lounge or in a giant pack of people, your outfit should reflect your desired mood, the music, and the venue. So! Since you may be in need of something new for your event, I visited and photographed some of Austin's top shops for South By style.

Discover Your Spring Style

Being stylish is about defining yourself and your body. Often times the term 'stylish' is applied to people who keep up with the latest trends. Trends come and go, but paying attention to exactly what works for you is important to creating a genuinely chic closet.

Applying the ABC's of image consulting is a good place to start...accentuate, balance, camoflauge. We all have the good, great, and not-so-great things about our body. Understanding, acknowledging and accepting these parts empowers us to create the perfect wardrobe.

There's a couple things to keep in mind when learning your ABC's...

Create Balance

When trying to cover up your less desirable bits, don't forget to accentuate your best attributes. The articles of clothing you use to do these two things should work together harmoniously.

If you want to cover your abdomen, choose a flowy top. Do not also choose flowy pants. Pair a skinny jean. Accentuating the good is just as important as camouflaging the bad.

Find your best fit

Clothing should fit like undergarments, like it was made for you. Since there is no standardized sizing in the US, it can be hard to find the perfect size for you. Instead, find your favorite designers and make them your go-to.

Use color and print strategically

Play with color to create an ensemble all your own. The brighter and bolder the more attention will be driven to that part of you. Think it through and then construct the look. Where do you want the attention driven?

Try something new

Often times we pick fabrics based on preconceived notions of what is good or bad. Choose fabrics not because of what you think should or would work. Step outside your comfort zone. Try new things. Uncharted territory is often the most exciting.

And don't forget to #shoplocal

Take Your Wardrobe from Winter to Spring with These Six Looks

I've learned to always carry a purse big enough to fit a sweater, because every afternoon, that's exactly where my sweater ends up. Austin's weather is unpredictable, to say the least, and the past two weeks have been the worst of it. I'm really never sure what I'm going to get when I step out of my apartment. Even if the day starts out at 40 degrees, you could be sweating by the end of it.

So! Because Austin likes to keep us guessing, I've put together looks to incorporate both winter and spring pieces for a chic style statement for whatever weather comes our way.

FLOWERS & LEATHER

Winter Pieces: Leather Jacket + Infinity Scarf

Spring Pieces: Floral Dress + Open-Toe Pumps

Bad Romance

Winter Pieces: Oversized Cardigan + Booties

Spring Pieces: Graphic Tee + Floral Skirt

Dinner and A Movie

Winter Pieces: Jeans + Booties

Spring Pieces: Faux-Fur Vest + Silk Blouse

PASTELS AND SEASHELLS

Winter Pieces: Midi Skirt + Scarf

Spring Pieces: Light-Weight Cardigan + Sandals

The Girl in the Coffee Shop

Spring Pieces: Flats + Mini Skirt

BELLINIS AT BRUNCH

How to Give Your Workwear a Facelift in 5 Minutes

I’m a big believer in the fact that making a few simple changes in anyone’s closet can make a huge difference, which is why I’m so excited to write this post this week. When it comes to styling a look for work or play, how you put it together is half of the battle. The other half is investing in quality pieces. Together, they are the key ingredients to creating the ideal outfit.

I've put together some tips to take your average workwear from predictable to eye-catching. Because to get what you want in life, you must always stand out.

Mix Neutrals Like a Pro

Forget what they taught you. Abandon how you've always seen it put together.

SWAP: Black AND Grey for Black & Cream

SWAP: Charcoal AND Light Grey for Charcoal & Brown

SWAP: Black and White for White & Cream

SWAP: Brown and Cream for Brown & Black

Add a Colorful Pump to a Staple Suit

I know you have a pair of fabulous pumps that need a little love. Now is the time. Don't be scared to incorporate more fun weekend wear into your workwear.

More personality in your clothes gives people more hints about who you are. The better they know you, the more likely they are to trust you and work with you.

And if you don't have them lying around, here's a few I've picked just for you...Click the picks to peruse.

For the Traditional

For the Creative

FOR THE ROMANTIC                            FOR THE POWERHOUSE

Ditch the Pants. Don a Power Dress.

Now of course, you've worn a dress to work before. You may have a very favorite that you wear over and over again or something you're sure looks good that you wear over and over again (those may be the same thing). The difference in the power dress is how you're wearing it. Instead of a cardigan or trench coat, pair it with the jacket from your power suit.

The jacket will give you an assertive presence, while the dress will add the pop of personality.

Now I would love to know...were these tips and tricks helpful? Will you don a power dress or vibrant pump? Comment below and tell me how your workwear got a facelift!

5 Essential Pieces for Your Winter Vacation

I have to admit, it has taken me a long time to figure out exactly how to pack the perfect suitcase. Everything I could need ends up in my luggage, but somehow I don't manage to wear everything that snuck in there.

That's because on vacation, when everything is supposed to be easy, I so often wear the same outfit twice. I know, it seems like I should be ashamed. When I'm packing, I have the best of intentions. I imagine myself sipping cocktails on a beach in a full length dress and heels...though in actuality, I am still sipping cocktails, but it's in the most comfortable dress I own. You know what? That's OK. Vacation is about kicking back, relaxing. In reality, style should reflect your state of mind. When I remember that, I realize it's OK to (in this instance) wear the same thing twice.

Of course, that doesn't mean you can't still look good while you relax. Being comfortable and looking good while you do it will make you more excited about your vacation. Whether you are at the beach or on the ski slopes, here are five versatile pieces with looks built around them that I would recommend bringing.

Heading to the Slopes?          Heading to the Sand?

Now I would love to know! Which travel essential sneaks into your suitcase the most? Make sure to comment below how you incorporated some of these essentials on your next winter vacation!

The Fabric of Society: Fashion and Style Throughout the Twentieth Century

Fashion evolves. The work of every generation is broken apart by newcomers, who discard what they dislike and use the remaining rubble to build the next generation’s styles and trends. One thing I’ve always loved about fashion is that it is an expression of everything that's going on around us. Social, political, and religious movements are reflected in what each generation wears.

When I think about MLK Day, my first reaction is to consider the developments in fashion that stem from the remarkable, unprecedented change that occurred in that decade. Then I feel guilty. How shallow can I be, considering fashion in the context of the greatest social movement in history? But putting my self-consciousness aside, truth be told, it is astounding. How quickly the conservative, traditionalism of the 1950’s shifted into the forward-thinking 1960s, only to be radically transformed into the free-loving 1970s.

Fashion of course can never fully honor the work, or the pain and suffering, of those who fought during the civil rights movement. But it is fascinating to study the broad-reaching impact generational change has. To honor that, I’ve pulled together a few looks that pay homage to each generation and the change they saw.

1950's

1960'S

1970's

1980's

1990's

Now I would love to hear from you! What are some trends that you remember from the twentieth century? Leave a comment below and tell me how you might pull some outfit inspirations from past decades!

Deconstructing Your NYE Look

How do you bring 2015 in with a bang? Learn to seamlessly coordinate the various elements that make up an outfit. Here are five things to zero-in on to be NYE prepped and ready.

5. HAIR

Hair is such an important part of any look because hair can make or break an outfit. If your hair's a hot mess, you can forget about anyone noticing anything other than that. For NYE, try something you rarely do. Create retro curls, put it up in an elegant bun, or incorporate a boho braid.

4. NAILS

This little detail doesn't go unnoticed. It's the icing on the cake. Just like the rest of the look, the nails must match. Go RED for a ballroom bash, go GOLD for a house party, go BLACK for an underground spot, and go PURPLE for an eclectic restaurant (that's where I'll be).

3. SHOES

Go big or go home. There is a very specific pair of shoes I dust off for this occasion every year. To give you an idea of what they look like, they also double as my Vegas heels.  If you also have that special pair of metallic, no less than 4' heels, pull them out. NYE is the perfect time for over-the-top fashion. After all, you'll only be bringing in 2015 once.

2. EMBELLISH

Despite the decadent nature of all the other elements of your outfit, keep the accessories to a minimum. Perhaps a cuff? Or knuckle rings? Or try something new this year: flash tattoos! Visit Headdress on South Lamar to find your perfect pack.

1. CLOTHING

Of course clothing is #1 because it will bring everything together. Whether you're in pastels or pewter, there is one thing to consider: the formality of your event. If you're at a NYE cocktail party or wedding, don't come in something less formal because you didn't plan ahead. Figure it out now, before you're scatter-brained the night of. And don't forget! Your layers should match the event too.

Now, I would love to hear from you! Make sure to comment below what your NYE outfit plans are!

Dress to Impress at the Holiday Party

The key to being stylish is being unpredictable, whether you’re at the office party or a friend’s holiday shindig. Being unpredictable doesn’t mean dressing like someone else. It means you avoid the drab, campy, overworked holiday costume of years past. This year, you should stand out… in the right ways.

I’ve put together a few ideas that will bring a little whimsy to your next holiday function.

Skip the red and green. Stick to black and white.

Flip a Classic.

Whether it's your mother's pearls or a vintage brooch, it can be incorporated into your outfit in a fun, exciting way.

Bring the Bling.

This is the only time of the year when tacky can turn chic. Embrace it. Costume jewelry is the perfect touch for any party look that A. won't burn a hole in your pocket and B. gets you in the mood to celebrate.

Dress Up Your Denim.

Denim can be worn to many semi-formal occasions as long as you follow one rule: The denim cannot be the star. A subtle dark blue or black denim paired with vibrant heels or a sequin sweater allows you to be comfortable and edgy while chatting around the punch bowl.

Now, I would love to hear from you! Comment below to tell me how you plan to stand out at your next holiday function!

Family, Feasting, and Fit: Picking the Perfect Pant for Thanksgiving

I consider myself one of the lucky ones. My mother is a chef and both of my grandmothers are exceptionally talented in the kitchen, so my Thanksgiving is predictably delicious. I, however, am not quite as talented in the kitchen. I've got the staples down for weeknights in my house (tacos, pasta, chicken...), but my contribution to Thanksgiving usually involves the pies (picking them up, not baking them).

Whether you're the culinary genius in your house or the couch potato this Thanksgiving, it's important to be comfortable. The Thanksgiving outfit plan is surprisingly important because cooking, couching, and eating all require a bit of stretch to your outfit. Also, you may find yourself in some family photos that are sure to stick around for a long time (either on Instagram or in your grandma's house).

So, I'm dedicating this week to making you look and feel fabulous for your big feast, and there's one element that's a must: LEGGINGS.

Picking the right pair of leggings, and the appropriate outfit to wear with them, depends on everything from your body type to your color palette. It's not always easy. I've laid out a few looks for a broad range of body types. But to find out how to create the best look for you, schedule an image assessment with me.

Now, I would love to hear from you! Leave a comment below to tell me how you managed to find the perfect Thanksgiving pant!
