The Perfect Sunnies for Your Face Shape

When it comes to accessorizing, Iris Apfel said it best, “More is more and less is a bore." Style is all about adding personal touches that take your outfit from run-of-the-mill to out-of-this-world. During these sunny summer days, an easy way to turn your outfit up a notch is through sunglasses. The key to finding the right shades is identifying your face shape. That’s where we come in. Your style future is looking bright!

While there is something to be said for wearing whatever makes you feel like a #bossbabe, we want to educate you on how to tell your own face shape and then determine the best sunglasses for your sense of style.

Square Shaped Faces

Do you have…

A strong jaw line that evenly lines up with your temples, giving you four symmetrical points?

Look for…

Round, oval, or cat eye sunglasses.

By adding soft lines to a strongly outlined face, you find a striking balance.

Stick with curves, not straight lines. Otherwise, you run the risk of looking robotic.

Heart Shaped Faces

If your forehead is wide and round at your hair line and your chin comes to a point, your face is heart-shaped.

Look for…

Sunnies with elongated bottoms. Wearing sunglasses with thin temples will also accentuate your striking cheekbones.

Oversized sunglasses can make your forehead look larger, so make sure the size of your sunnies matches the scale of your face.

Diamond Shaped Faces

Do you have…

Prominent cheeks? If your face is widest just below your eye line and you have a shorter forehead and chin, you have a diamond shaped face.

Look for…

Pointed sunglasses to accentuate your cheekbones.

Top heavy frames show off your perfect pout!

Oval Shaped Faces

Do you have…

A longer face with narrow chin and cheeks?

Look for…

Wide frames to balance the length of your face.

Oval faces have the most leeway with what shape of sunglasses work. With all shapes though, strong details on the top of your sunglasses will bring the eye upward.

Round Shaped Faces

Do you have…

A soft face that is almost equal in length and width?

Look for…

Bold, rectangular lenses with thick temples

These sunglasses are large, in charge and work well since the sunglasses are so wide and angular!

Inverted Triangle Faces

Do you have…

A defined jaw line and a narrow forehead?

Look for…

Soft lines and top heavy frames.

These frames soften and narrow the chin, striking the perfect balance!

These round frames make a huge style statement!

5 Minute Fashion: Is It Really Possible?

What’s holding you back from having the style you’ve always wanted? If your answer to that question is time, then you are far from being alone.  Crying babies, pressing work clients, an active social life, relationships – they all take up our time and energy. Sometimes, the first thing to get the boot is self care.

I enjoy waking up early and slowly getting ready for the day. This is a luxury that I know I won’t have forever, so I relish it.  After hearing a mouthful from an envious friend, I realized how much time I was wasting. She then challenged me, for the next 3 days, to style my outfit in 5 minutes or less.

The truth is, my experiment is a stark reality for a lot of you, and so it is with genuine respect and curiosity that I set out on this mission. Time is a luxury, and it’s one that I have been wasting!

On Day One, I went with what I thought would be easiest. 5 minutes is not a long time when you think about your outfit, your accessories and your shoes! I chose a green dress that flatters my shape, is business casual, and is in my color wheel.

Emily Blanco models a business casual look with a green dress, statement necklace, denim jacket, and a braided belt.

I paired this spotted green number with a statement necklace with contrasting deep blues, a simple gold belt, a blue jean jacket (that was gone by noon), and some peep-toe booties for a little bit of flare. All in all, I felt good – and I made it in just under 5 minutes!

By Day Two, I was ready to go again! This time I needed to make it a little harder on myself, so I decided to mix and match pieces rather than choose a dress. I bet you can guess what my go-to was – a pencil skirt!

Emily Blanco models a look with a floral pencil skirt, booties, and a gray tank.

This floral skirt makes me feel ultra chic and feminine. I put this muted gray racerback top with it to bring out the darker tones in the skirt, and added my favorite nude booties. The result was that I felt like a boss! I chose all of this and at 4:37, all that was left to add was a ballet-pink stone earring.

After reveling in my success from the previous day, I assumed Day 3 would be easy, because I wanted to dress casually. I completely failed. You know why? Life. It happens! I searched up and down and could NOT find the jeans I wanted to wear. Sometimes the stress of it all makes you blind to what is actually hanging directly in front of you in your closet.

Nevertheless, I had to power through. I picked a different pair of jeans, added my favorite nude shirt, a leopard print scarf, flats, and sea foam stud jewelry.

Here is what’s important to consider when creating a wardrobe that works for your life: you need to have clothing that can be mixed and matched in multiple ways.  Most importantly, you need to like your clothing! Filtering through pieces you don’t like takes up unnecessary time.

Emily Blanco models a casual look with some ripped jeans, black scrappy flats, a cheetah-print infinity scarf, a simple tee, and some statement earrings.

If you have a shirt you feel you could take over the world in, there are probably a million ways to wear it. Add a different necklace each time, try a new skirt with it, or add a blazer and pumps. Even if the individual items you’re wearing are old, you’ll revitalize them.

This challenge gave me extra time in the morning, and it was time that I used productively. I may not be getting children ready for school or preparing for meetings like my CEO friend, but time will always be a hot commodity, and only having 5 minutes to get dressed allowed me to prioritize and be imaginative with the options that I had.

A Dress in Three Acts

One thing my clients never say is that they don't have a favorite outfit. Everyone has a favorite outfit. No matter if function or high fashion is the most important component of what you wear to work or to play, we all reach for something in the morning.

The problem my clients face time and time again is the inability to style their wardrobe or their favorite outfit in any way outside of the box. A white shirt can easily work with black pants or a navy dress and a tan blazer can easily fit together, but finding an outfit that excites and surprises you and the people around you is another story.

Thus I found my topic for this month's post. Grab your favorite summer dress RIGHT NOW and pair it with something new, something you haven't thought of before.

I styled my favorite summer dress to give you some ideas on how to wear it from business to brunch. And don't forget to be brave! Your style is unique and specific to you. Treat it as so.

Discover Your Spring Style

Being stylish is about defining yourself and your body. Often times the term 'stylish' is applied to people who keep up with the latest trends. Trends come and go, but paying attention to exactly what works for you is important to creating a genuinely chic closet.

Applying the ABC's of image consulting is a good place to start...accentuate, balance, camoflauge. We all have the good, great, and not-so-great things about our body. Understanding, acknowledging and accepting these parts empowers us to create the perfect wardrobe.

There's a couple things to keep in mind when learning your ABC's...

Create Balance

When trying to cover up your less desirable bits, don't forget to accentuate your best attributes. The articles of clothing you use to do these two things should work together harmoniously.

If you want to cover your abdomen, choose a flowy top. Do not also choose flowy pants. Pair a skinny jean. Accentuating the good is just as important as camouflaging the bad.

Find your best fit

Clothing should fit like undergarments, like it was made for you. Since there is no standardized sizing in the US, it can be hard to find the perfect size for you. Instead, find your favorite designers and make them your go-to.

Use color and print strategically

Play with color to create an ensemble all your own. The brighter and bolder the more attention will be driven to that part of you. Think it through and then construct the look. Where do you want the attention driven?

Try something new

Often times we pick fabrics based on preconceived notions of what is good or bad. Choose fabrics not because of what you think should or would work. Step outside your comfort zone. Try new things. Uncharted territory is often the most exciting.

And don't forget to #shoplocal

Recreate Red Carpet Looks in Everyday Style

I have to say that I'm kind of glad award season is over. I always feel stressed about be attentive for every second of each show, and on top of that, I've tried to squeeze an exorbitant number of trips to the movies in over the last couple months. Of course, the movies aren't the important part. It's all about the fashion.

That's why I'm exploring exactly how to translate red carpet looks and trends into everyday style this week. Although these are just a drop in the bucket of red carpet fashion, they're some of my favorite trends from this awards season.

OSCARS // DAKOTA JOHNSON // SCARLET TREND

Take Your Wardrobe from Winter to Spring with These Six Looks

I've learned to always carry a purse big enough to fit a sweater, because every afternoon, that's exactly where my sweater ends up. Austin's weather is unpredictable, to say the least, and the past two weeks have been the worst of it. I'm really never sure what I'm going to get when I step out of my apartment. Even if the day starts out at 40 degrees, you could be sweating by the end of it.

So! Because Austin likes to keep us guessing, I've put together looks to incorporate both winter and spring pieces for a chic style statement for whatever weather comes our way.

FLOWERS & LEATHER

Winter Pieces: Leather Jacket + Infinity Scarf

Spring Pieces: Floral Dress + Open-Toe Pumps

5 Essential Pieces for Your Winter Vacation

I have to admit, it has taken me a long time to figure out exactly how to pack the perfect suitcase. Everything I could need ends up in my luggage, but somehow I don't manage to wear everything that snuck in there.

That's because on vacation, when everything is supposed to be easy, I so often wear the same outfit twice. I know, it seems like I should be ashamed. When I'm packing, I have the best of intentions. I imagine myself sipping cocktails on a beach in a full length dress and heels...though in actuality, I am still sipping cocktails, but it's in the most comfortable dress I own. You know what? That's OK. Vacation is about kicking back, relaxing. In reality, style should reflect your state of mind. When I remember that, I realize it's OK to (in this instance) wear the same thing twice.

Of course, that doesn't mean you can't still look good while you relax. Being comfortable and looking good while you do it will make you more excited about your vacation. Whether you are at the beach or on the ski slopes, here are five versatile pieces with looks built around them that I would recommend bringing.

Heading to the Slopes?          Heading to the Sand?

Now I would love to know! Which travel essential sneaks into your suitcase the most? Make sure to comment below how you incorporated some of these essentials on your next winter vacation!

The Fabric of Society: Fashion and Style Throughout the Twentieth Century

Fashion evolves. The work of every generation is broken apart by newcomers, who discard what they dislike and use the remaining rubble to build the next generation’s styles and trends. One thing I’ve always loved about fashion is that it is an expression of everything that's going on around us. Social, political, and religious movements are reflected in what each generation wears.

When I think about MLK Day, my first reaction is to consider the developments in fashion that stem from the remarkable, unprecedented change that occurred in that decade. Then I feel guilty. How shallow can I be, considering fashion in the context of the greatest social movement in history? But putting my self-consciousness aside, truth be told, it is astounding. How quickly the conservative, traditionalism of the 1950’s shifted into the forward-thinking 1960s, only to be radically transformed into the free-loving 1970s.

Fashion of course can never fully honor the work, or the pain and suffering, of those who fought during the civil rights movement. But it is fascinating to study the broad-reaching impact generational change has. To honor that, I’ve pulled together a few looks that pay homage to each generation and the change they saw.

1950's

1960'S

1970's

1980's

1990's

Now I would love to hear from you! What are some trends that you remember from the twentieth century? Leave a comment below and tell me how you might pull some outfit inspirations from past decades!

The 5 Essential Sweaters for Your Closet

We all fill our closet with a certain level of impulse buys. I always find myself buying a plethora of loud and out-there sweaters. While a trendy piece can seem fun for a season or two, it eventually seems outdated and uninteresting. You need staple pieces. You especially need staple sweaters because sweaters have a big task to accomplish. They have to work well with many other things in your closet: workwear, jackets, pants, dresses, skirts...pretty much everything except your swim suit. Thus, I've dedicated this week to the five essential sweaters you need in your closet.

5. V-neck

The V-neck is naturally slimming and versatile, both of which are important things for almost anyone's lifestyle. You're ready for work or play.

PERK: It doubles as a top when you aren't in the mood to handle layering.

JUST ADD: dark denim + a pointed toe pump

4. Shawl Collar

This sweater is all about the one thing we all love about sweaters: the COZY factor. Slip into this outfit, and you'll remember exactly why you love this season.

PERK: It's perfect when running to the grocery store or a walk in the park.

JUST ADD: classic white tee + colorful pant + infinity scarf

3. Maxi Sweater

One of my favorite elements to play with in style is proportion. The Maxi Sweater gives any outfit a playful touch. Dress it up, dress it down. It's a piece that works well with your other closet classics.

PERK:  This simple piece can become eye-catching just because of it's relationship to other parts of your outfit.

JUST ADD: mini skirt + booties +  graphic tee

2. Cropped Sweater

This is my favorite piece during the couple weeks when it's not quite necessary to have something heavier.

PERK: This sweater accentuates your sexy, feminine shape.

JUST ADD: High-waisted skirt + flats

1. Cardigan

This is a piece for all occasions. Whether you love neutrals or a big pop of color, add this piece to any outfit for a sophisticated finish.

PERK: It goes with everything from grandma's pearls to a body con dress.

JUST ADD: tank + midi skirt + statement necklace

Now, I would love to hear from you! Tell me in the comment section below which sweater essential you'll be rocking this fall!

Loving Your Impulse Buy: The Overalls

In our final edition of ‘Loving Your Impulse Buys’, I’m addressing the emotions that accompany many shopping trips.

THE CHALLENGE:

You’re in need of some retail therapy, which means a typical purchase just won’t cut it. You’re draw to something that makes you feel oh-so nostalgic.

Suddenly you’ve got: OVERALLS

THE PROBLEM:

At the store you convinced yourself they aren’t too hipster, but when you get them home, it’s another story.

THERE’S HOPE:

They can work beyond the boundaries of Williamsburg, but they should only be worn to the most casual occasions. When purchasing something outside your comfort zone, pull pieces from your closet. Don’t buy more to compensate for your apprehension.

THE SOLUTION:

Casual separates and accessories are the key to making this work.

Pull these key items:

TANK                                       HAT                            EARRINGS                    BATHING SUIT

Now, I would love to hear from you! Leave a comment below to tell me how you made your overalls impulse buy work!
