Ever wonder why some front tucks are perfect and others fall short? There’s a certain finesse to mastering the front tuck, and if you’re practicing on your own, it can feel impossible to get it just right.

Simple styling makes a big difference.

Great outfits don't just come together on their own. Each piece has to be put into place to create a look that appears effortlessly polished.

And chances are you've stirred up this bad-ass-outfit-making magic before (whether by accident or on purpose). The trick to recreating similarly awesome outfits is to ask yourself why you liked that particular outfit. If you pinpoint that fact, you can construct other that have a similar appearance.

But this won't get you far enough.

To truly master your wardrobe, you need to take each new outfit as an individual creative project. Each outfit is about celebrating you on that given day. Because you don't want to start from scratch, you need to build a base of styling techniques.

Styling techniques allow you to be creative, while providing a base of knowledge to consistently work from. They cut down the time and energy you have to put into each outfit, while still making each outfit fresh and energetic.

Which is why this week I'm showing you 4 of them to take your basic tops from boring to boss.

Austin Bridal Secrets Interview

I had such a blast being interviewed by R.J. Johnson of Austin Bridal Secrets this week.  If you want more info about exactly what I do as an image consultant, take a listen!

Now I would love to know! What did you learn? Make sure to leave a comment below and ask any questions you have! I'll be more than glad to answer them.

A Dress in Three Acts

One thing my clients never say is that they don't have a favorite outfit. Everyone has a favorite outfit. No matter if function or high fashion is the most important component of what you wear to work or to play, we all reach for something in the morning.

The problem my clients face time and time again is the inability to style their wardrobe or their favorite outfit in any way outside of the box. A white shirt can easily work with black pants or a navy dress and a tan blazer can easily fit together, but finding an outfit that excites and surprises you and the people around you is another story.

Thus I found my topic for this month's post. Grab your favorite summer dress RIGHT NOW and pair it with something new, something you haven't thought of before.

I styled my favorite summer dress to give you some ideas on how to wear it from business to brunch. And don't forget to be brave! Your style is unique and specific to you. Treat it as so.

What to Wear for Weddings Galore

Repeat after me: "I will not wear the same boring thing to every wedding this year."

Wedding season is a funny one, because it's really not like any other occasion or seasonal event. Even my daily getup gets more thought than my wedding season one. For some reason, I am so distracted by gifts, travel, and agenda up until the day of the nuptials that picking any outfit is inevitably a last minute decision. No more.

This year is the year to find something you feel and look beautiful in. Now, to find that special something...There are a lot of factors to consider when putting together a look for a wedding.

The first is subtlety.

Be subtle, not too sexy, and as always, incredibly chic. This is probably the only non-work occasion where an outfit should be understated, because you never want to take attention away from the wedding dress and the bride. This rule applies to the dress, the jewelry and the shoes.

Having said that, your understated look may be someone else's over-the-top outfit. Stick to what you consider understated. Your style is your own, and even when toned down, you should still always be able to express it.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how subtlety is important in order to avoid taking attention away from the bride.

The second is comfort.

I worry about being comfortable for the duration of a wedding much more than any other occasion, even if it's just as long. Perhaps it's the dancing or the amount of food that I'm predicting I'll eat or perhaps it's both. Either way, comfort is important. If you also relish the fact that dancing and food are the best parts of a wedding, I would give your dress a test run. Pop on some music and dance in it at home.

The third is environment.

Weddings are so often indoor and outdoor, so picking the right fabric and layering pieces is key to staying warm enough or cool enough wherever you are. Terrain is also a factor to consider. This year I have a few weddings where they were very specific about wearing shoes to fit the outdoor venue. Even if it isn't mentioned to you, the venue needs to be on your radar.

Raquel Greer Gordian discusses how the type of terrain the wedding will be in is important to consider when planning an outfit.

How to Wear Denim to Work

Figuring out how to take denim out of it's natural weekend habit can be a bit dicey. It's perfect for your Saturday stroll, but incorporating it into your workwear takes a bit more skill. The trick is to treat it like your other workwear staples. It's a substitute for the white blouse, navy blazer, etc...The reason to wear it instead of those staples? It's unexpected. That's what style is all about. When a style element is unexpected, it's interesting. And so are you. Here's how to execute it:

THE SHORTS

Loving Your Impulse Buy: The Overalls

In our final edition of ‘Loving Your Impulse Buys’, I’m addressing the emotions that accompany many shopping trips.

THE CHALLENGE:

You’re in need of some retail therapy, which means a typical purchase just won’t cut it. You’re draw to something that makes you feel oh-so nostalgic.

Suddenly you’ve got: OVERALLS

THE PROBLEM:

At the store you convinced yourself they aren’t too hipster, but when you get them home, it’s another story.

THERE’S HOPE:

They can work beyond the boundaries of Williamsburg, but they should only be worn to the most casual occasions. When purchasing something outside your comfort zone, pull pieces from your closet. Don’t buy more to compensate for your apprehension.

THE SOLUTION:

Casual separates and accessories are the key to making this work.

Pull these key items:

TANK                                       HAT                            EARRINGS                    BATHING SUIT

Now, I would love to hear from you! Leave a comment below to tell me how you made your overalls impulse buy work!

Loving Your Impulse Buy: The Ripped Jeans

In the second edition of ‘Loving Your Impulse Buys’, I'm addressing a moment we've all had:

THE CHALLENGE:

After Sunday brunch with girlfriends, window shopping abruptly turns into negligent spending. Suddenly you’ve got: THE RIPPED JEANS

THE PROBLEM:

You think it’s too youthful and unpolished.

THERE'S HOPE:

You can pair it with more than a t-shirt and baseball cap. Just like the patterned pants, ripped jeans are a playful alternative to your average denim. With the right accessories and compliments, you can pull them out for everything from a dinner date in the city to a day trip in the country.

THE SOLUTION:

Stick with your style on this one. If your style is…

     Romantic:                                      Alluring:                                             Sporty:

Now, I would love to hear from you! Comment below to tell me which solution you chose for a ripped jeans impulse buy!

Loving Your Impulse Buy: The Patterned Pants

We’ve all been through the ups and downs of impulse buys. At first it feels exciting and risky, but three months later, that little item is now more of an outcast than a star in your closet.

I've devoted this week's posts to exploring the ways you can use your impulse buys to feel a little daring, a lot confident, and definitively stylish.

The Challenge:

- Window shopping turns into an impulse buy. Suddenly you've got: THE PATTERNED PANT

- You think it works with nothing you own.

- There’s hope: You can try something more out-of-the-box then your average denim. These pants will do the trick. The wild prints and patterns are an instant mood elevator and bring an element of fun to your style.

The Solution:

Finding the perfect compliment. Complete the outfit with…

If the pants are fitted:

     Silk Blouse

     Statement Earrings

     Cocktail Ring

      Bootie

If the pants are flowy:

Tank Top

Bangles

Bib Necklace

Wedges

Now, I would love to hear from you! Leave a comment below to tell me how you overcame the challenge of a patterned pant!
